1DC: Canon 1D-C short test film - EARTH : 2965

Hey Guys,

I have not posted in a while, but I do lurk when I get a chance. Being busy with work and kids makes things difficult at times.

Anyhow.

I have been one of those people that have been secretly desiring the Canon 1D-c ever since the short film "The Ticket" was released at NAB 2012. I loved seeing a professional like Shane Hurlbut speak about the camera and how excited he got about the tech. (I'm looking forward to Shane's Illumination Experience Tour. It's hard not to like Shane.) I jumped in on this purchase right before the Sony A7s was released and have been back and forth with myself wether or not it was the right call. I really loved my 5D MK II and even more so my 5D MK III. I bought a Canon C100 about a year and still found myself shooting B-Roll with my 5D Mark III cams. I tried the Magic Lantern RAW with one of my 5D MK IIIs and although I thought it was very nice… I was not a fan of the work flow, so since I had picked up a 256K San Disk CF for $1000, I felt compelled just to jump in and buy the 1D-C. I really love this camera and wish I had bought it much sooner as I feel that it was a bit over priced at release and more over priced at this point. Still, it matches my Canon C100 very well and I am making money off it and will continue to do so into the future… I really wish there had been more footage from this camera to have convinced me to purchase it earlier… I just think it's just somewhat of a rare beast in the wild, but I could be wrong.

I love this camera and it's an amazingly versatile tool at a small footprint and non-tethered 4K. It really shines in 4K and it really allows for amazing cropping.

The footage was down converted to ProRes HQ 2K and then edited on a 2K timeline in Premiere CC 2014. The second to last shot of the film has a zoom out using the 4k camera clip on the 2K timeline. It's moments like this that I really realized what 4K can bring… I am generally frame things exactly how I like them, but having 4K really offers you the luxury to crop, create zooms, etc.

With that said, here is a short film we created to test our new Canon 1D-C EOS camera. It was shot with the Canon 100mm L 2.8 IS Macro and the Canon 24-70mm L 2.8 Ver 1. We used the Kessler CineSlider with Parallax and Oracle system.

I have a father in law suffering with Alzheimer's disease and memories and memories lost have really been in my mind lately… The film is a very short exploration of these thoughts about memories…

I am always trying to dial in my client work to minimize color correction, why because many of my client's won't color correct. I'm adding a link to show how minimal the CC really is… Often it is just crushing the blacks a wee bit as is the case here.

I really loved it. Great job and really good execution of an idea to get the right emotion across. I can definite appreciate the work you put into selecting the perfect phrases.

Would be even better if you used some subtle diffusion

We actually started out with the intention of diffusing with a smoke machine, but it was just 2 of us and we had to do this in one day. You can see a little smoke in one of the early wider shots. The robot would only walk about 3-4 inches and stop sometimes it would stop every step or two. This made it very difficult to maintain the smoke consistency, so we simply decided to go with out it in order to finish in time.

What would you have suggested for diffusion? Post diffusion? Lens diffusion? A stocking behind the lens?

Thank you

I appreciate the comment, thank you. I probably spent just as much time dialing in the text as I did with the edit.

Great idea love depft a field .

I really like the DOF of the 1.3 crop of the 4K 1D-C footage… somewhere between the depth of field of the C100 and the 5D Mark III. Macro can be tough because the field of focus becomes very narrow. I'm not a huge fan of the 24-70 L 2.8 lens, but it worked here.

Thank you G.

I'm a 1D C user too, my tests and experiments suggest that Schneider Digicon filter works magically well with 1D C (and all C series cameras), it actually expands the dynamic range of the camera by 0.6-1 stop (in the highlights). the diffusion is subtle yet effective, it also works wonders on skintone which brings the image a step closer to Alexa.

What grade of filter are you using with what lens?

Very well done!!! I love the look and mood you've created, the music selection was spot on, as well as the text. I showed it to my wife, and she was visibly moved by your work. I considered the 1D-C also last year when researching my next purchase and just couldn't find the extra $$$ to pull that trigger. It looks like a real winner!

*Sorry to learn of your father-in-law's condition, it's sad and I hope things go as well as possible with you and your family.

Thank you. Alzheimer's is one of those things that I truly wish I never get… I don't want my children to have to deal with it. I can't imagine sitting
across from someone I've know my entire life and thinking, "who is this person".

Also, the 1D-C is great, but so many things are happening so quickly these days and the image quality and affordability just get's better and better.

Best Regards,

Chris

Great. This should have a VO version too.

Thank you. I often feel that reading text can hit home differently than VO as we all read things in our own way… that is why we often miss interpret each other's texts, emails, posts in the way we thing they are being said. … It would be hard to find a proper voice and performance for this simple film.

Thank you… I am interested in these filters… they look nice. So do the Xenon lenses ;-) I wish they would make these filters to screw on to lenses…. Matte box is not always practical for my work, and don't use mine that often. I do realize the benefit, just have to do things rather quickly with the docufilm style work I am shooting/directing most of the time. I often use the Tiffen WW FX 1 filter for softening, but did not use it here as we initially set off to diffuse with atmospheric change.

Lovely, lovely work. The image is just nice, that what I love about Canon.

The 1DC didn't become obselete or overpriced when the GH4 or A7s were announced, just because two cameras have the same resolution it does NOT mean they are equal. With that logic, a 250,000$ F35 would be equal to a T2i, 1080p, but its not.

First of all size, the A7s is only smaller in 1080p. With the shogun it's a much bigger package than the 1DC. Second is image size, the GH4 is much smaller which in itself eliminates it from making the 1Dc any less relevant. The A7s gets this right though. Third is the actual image, which is the most important factor here, the 1Dc produces better images, period. The GH4 image looks as electronic and video-like as an Ex1 and the A7s has terribly off unpleasing greenish yellowy colour accuracy, the 1DC produces an image with -superior sharpness yet still softer in sharpness, no edge enhancing crap, -MUCH better colours, Canon's colour science is unmatched and gives a much nicer image especially for skin tones, and the codec is much stronger than the other two being a significantly higher bit rate and is 4:2:2 vs. 4:2:0, in actual use the 1DC images are much closer to raw in gradeability than the GH4 internal codec. -The low-light performance is significantly better than the GH4, and similar to the A7s until 25600, then the A7s takes the lead, yet even under 12800, the 1DC's noise texture and pattern is superior to the A7s, and is made up of luminance noise not ugly colour specks of green red and blue. I can go on on how it's a professional body not a consumer-plastic one, and that it has a s35 mode that looks better than the C300, and that it's the world's best stills camera, etc. Does it have issues? Yes. Of course ;)

I love the GH4 and own one, but it does not make the 1DC obselete. The image aesthetic is significantly different that I am only using it for wide detailed shots now, where it excells, but for EVERYTHING else I prefer the 2010 60D image! I simply fell in love with the 1Dc image when I used it a ear back, and I've been in an affair since then trying to justiy owning one.

actually, until someone makes a camera that produces as nice of an image an the 1Dc, with a smaller body, and costing less, the 1DC is still very relevant and not overpriced. You can't be overpriced if you don't have any competetion.
