I found out something kind of interesting.
I've been working on this mini-doc in South America and I've made 2 trips down there to shoot.
The first time I was using the Tamron 17-50 VC f2.8 and I shot with it extensively. I thought the image quality was pretty good, but I HATED the focus ring (super short focus throw and very loose feeling).
So I got back and ordered the Canon 17-55 IS f2.8 which has a much better focus ring.
I tested out both lenses for about an hour side by side and the Canon was the better lens IMO in terms of color and far sharper for stills, especially towards the corners. For video, the IQ was negligible.
So I went back the 2nd time and shot with the Canon.
When I got back, I noticed that the Canon (being the sharper lens) aliased more than the Tamron. It funny because when I was using the Tamron in the 1080 mode, I though the Aliasing thing was completely overblown, because it didn't alias that much.
But then with the Canon, the aliasing was definitely more of an issue (especially wide + higher F-Stop). It was not too terrible, but more noticeable than the Tamron for sure.
So something to think if you're shopping between those lenses.
If there we no aliasing on the 7D, the Canon would be the better lens, but until that happens..... Kind of wish I didn't sell that Tamron VC. LOL. But the Canon does have the richer colors.
The sharper and wider the lens, the more aliasing.
