Candle test 550D/T2i vs FX1000 camcorder

I did a 'one candle test' with the 550D, which I own, and compared it with the camcorder Sony FX1000, I have the option to buy. The ergonomics of these cameras are totally different: the FX1000 has a lot of buttons on its body, and records hdv on minidv tape. It also has a 20x zoom lens with autofocus, 3 xvid cmos sensors, a built in triple nd filter etc. It is an aging prosumer tape camera.
Both cameras have a reputation of being good at low light. The FX1000 has a f1.6 iris at its shortest focal length.
So here is the comparison:

id steer clear of the fx100 simply because of the HDV format. if you need a proper "video" camera, youd be much better advised to pick up a used hpx170

I already own a 550D and I have no need for a 5DII. What I like about the FX1000 is the ergonomics and autofocus. No trouble focusing at wide aperture, which can be a real pain with dslrs. I have some projects in the pipeline which need reliable focus. Can't be done with a dslr, except when investing even more in accessoreis...

look into a used hpx170. FAR better camera.

and not to further push you off your path, but the GH2 (with the right lenses) has pretty good "live" "tap the screen" autofocus

Sony Vegas, which I use all the time, doesn't work well with the hpx170 files.

I know about the GH2. I'm not sure about the ergonomics of it. It must be a bit like using the 550D.

Also, when shooting corporate video (that's the kind of projects I have coming) people want to see a 'videocamera'. A dslr is 'amateur-ish'. This is not my personal opinion, btw.

yeah, i just did a corporate job at BP a few weeks ago. we used a gh2 for 2nd angle on interviews. about 4 people asked us why we were taking pictures. their tune changed once they saw the shot. this is one area where DSLRS may trump a video camera.
