Cancer-Cola

One man's humor is another man's insult. Ugafan has a dry sense of humor. There was no harm in it.

Everything can cause cancer or some other nasty afflicition, especially when consumed outside of moderation.

Give it some time, there will be a study that says it is good for you or helps prevent some other disease. Take alcohol, for example, especially red wine..........mmmmmmmm Merlot......
That's other people's saliva.
But gopher saliva is good for you.

As far as the issue of moderation goes - I think the point being made is that there really is no way to drink soft drinks "in moderation" because the amount of sugar in them is much higher than what the body is meant to ingest at one time, which can really send insulin levels out of whack.

This assumes of course that by saying you're going to drink one soda a month you mean one can at one time once a month, and not one can over the course of time.

That said - I would highly recommend everyone commenting in this thread actually read the article linked to in the original post.
Not to say there isn't possibly some truth to the claim being made, I found this section to be pretty interesting:

"Although this study found a risk, the finding was based on a relatively small number of cases and it remains unclear whether it is a causal association or not," said Mayne, who serves on the board of the journal, which is published by the American Association for Cancer Research.

"Soft drink consumption in Singapore was associated with several other adverse health behaviors such as smoking and red meat intake, which we can't accurately control for."

So while the study might be interesting... it definitely needs to be replicated in some way to see if it really has any creedence.
That said - I don't think anyone is arguing that soda is good for the body... so probably better safe than sorry.

The book Outliers by Malcom Gladwell mentions a really interesting case study about health/disease having a lot to do with community/happiness/contentment and not as much about diet/exercise as we typically assume.

Well, one's happiness (as defined by stress levels, life-satisfaction, etc) can have a direct effect upon one's diet and exercise habits...

Precisely.
While avarege Joe & doctor focuses on blood glucose levels at regular check-ups, insulin levels may be already out of hand to balance excessive sugar present in the body.
You dont want high insulin levels; it is pretty much precursor to many diesases that will follow-up: Potential heart diseases(due to clogged arteries), diabetes, kidney dysfunctions, organ failures, obesity etc...
That s why regardless of what your glucose levels are you should be getting a 'fasting insulin test' once in a while to make sure all is good. Best $75 you'll ever spend for your health.

Wow... so since Coka~Cola was available since 1886, then we must have been killing ourselves ever since.

I'm sorry, but it's ridiculous. Are soft drinks bad for you? Yes... So don't drink them. Will it kill you to drink a soft drink now and then? I seriously doubt it.
If over time they do kill you, so what? I'd rather enjoy a soft drink now and then than sit around worrying that one day I might die because I enjoyed a coke with a movie (had to add in the movie part DVXUser!).

Sugar is not bad for you, infact if it wasnt for the glucose we wouldnt exist. It is body's main energy source. You need sugar consumption in moderation; if you eat a halfspoon of honey everyday it is moderation, few pieces of dark cholocate everyday is moderation. Moderate use can be frequent, as long as the amount is right.
No, a soft drink now and then will not kill you. By the way I never met anyone who drinks coke 'once a month' only. It is usually either everyday(or very frequent) or never kind of habit.

I think I remember reading somewhere that carbonation is bad for you too. Something to do with interference with calcium uptake, IIRC...

I've cleaned my old corroded and rusted car battery in seconds by pouring a coke onto it. Anyone who has ever spilled
the Coke syrup when refilling the soda at a job can tell you that it makes the floor a lighter color than it ever was.

The acids really throws off your ph system to balance itself, and eats up your stomach and intestines over a long period of time.

The fake sweeteners don't help either.

Coke used to be made with pure cane sugar, til the late 70's, now it's just high fructose corn syrup.

I have a coke addiction myself, and I must say that whenever I stop drinking it, I feel so much better. Not to mention my teeth are happier.

I totally believe tht if you drink coke religously over a long perioud of time that it increases your odds of getting cancer, and other stomach related maladies.
