I would like to find out exactly how the 5D labels its footage, and I am wondering if there is a program that allows you to see this information, or even change it. I ask because when I import the camera's H.264 files into Final Cut, they come in labeled with a Field Dominance of Upper (Odd), which I associate with interlaced footage, not progressive. They also are labeled as 30 fps.
When I transcode to ProRes 422 (LT) for editing and deselect the "interlaced scaling" option in MPEG Streamclip, the ProRes clips still come in as Upper (Odd) field dominance, and 30 fps. Then when I send the edited project to Compressor, it seems to read the frame rate as 29.97, not 30, and I have had some outputs for DVD Studio Pro that had horizontal lines in some frames with more movement, as if the footage is interlaced.
So that made me wonder if Compressor is "seeing" the footage as interlaced, because of the Upper (Odd) Field Dominance metadata. And it also made me wonder what the true frame rate is. I have seen numerous posts in this forum and others that say it is definitely 30 fps, and others that say it is definitely 29.97. And I take it that Canon never says anything about what it actually is.
So I'm interested in looking under the hood, if that is possible.
Any enlightenment much appreciated,
Jim Bee
