Can you "undo" the FCP conversion of MXF files to Quicktime?

I'm working as an AC on a commercial shoot today and the editor has requested we leave all of the media files in MXF format, but the DP would like to be able to see some of the footage after it's copied to the HD. Here's a (perhaps overly cautious) question:

I'm using Final Cut 5.1, and if I use the "Import p2" function, will it actually convert/replace the MXF files on the drive to Quicktime files, or will those MXF files remain intact for delivery to the editor?

Thanks very much,
David

With FCP, using that function, you can view the files but don't have to import them.

Another way to go would be to download and use P2CMS, which is free software that includes an MXF viewing application.

My recommendation for Mac users is to never convert the files to quicktimes at all. Just use Raylight instead. It leaves the footage in MXF format, and makes it viewable and editable on a Mac as-is, without ever having to undergo the conversion to quicktime files.
