can you record minidv and hd simultaneously

for back up purposes... an extended overseas shoot would scare me to have my life on a hard disk that could drop etc etc (insert worst case scenario)

i am wondering could you shoot on HD and miniDV at the same time for back up?
 
Definitely yes for recording miniDV. But for recording HD, I'm not sure. I believe you could shoot on P2 and hard disk simultaneously. But I don't think you can record onto the tape unless you're shooting miniDV mode.

So if you want to shoot miniDV, yes you could record to tape and to hard disk simultaneously (you can do that with any DV camera, actually).

For high-def, no you couldn't record to the tape, but yes you could record to P2 and to hard disk simultaneously.
 
It was eluded that you probably could NOT record simultainously.. but that guy was preaty unsure.
I'll ask and post in the "news from IBC" thread today.

It would be awesome if you could record HD to P2 or HDD while at the same time recording a downrezed SD signal to DV for dailies or even offline.
 
I don't think you can do it simultaneously, but you can do it after you're done shooting; you can downrez 720p footage to miniDV tape, retaining the variable-frame-rate nature of the footage and retaining timecode.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but one of the photos from IBC showed a switch on the back of the HVX that SEEMED to select between recording to P2 and recording to tape.... similar to cameras that switch between, say, miniDV and flash MPEG recording. Are you really sure that in the DV25 case, recording to both is possible?

I don't believe you can record to P2 and tape at the same time, no.
 
that would be fine too honestly.... doing it after the fact.

just for the stuff you really wanna keep... just incase anything ever happened to your HD, at least you have an SD backup... sorta bittersweet really, but ya never know.

what i would want more then anything is some type of RAID firestore... RAID 5 that is... i know professional direct-to-HD stuff does this, apparently there was some device used at the Athens olympics like that. just record the same footage to 2 harddrives at the same time; if one dies you have the other.

Ooops... that IS what he was asking. I guess i was having flashbacks of some earlier discussion...

Sad about P2 and MiniDV for at least DV25, though.... it would have been nice. For us paranoid folks....
