Can the Split Screen Effect be removed in post?

Has anyone taken some footage to a professional post house and tried to remove the SSE? I imagine it is possible, but I'd love to know the results if anyone has done it. Thank you.

It would take some serious attention in post, because the level of SSE varies, and there are cases where the SSE "hunts" and it can actually flop sides -- left side darker/redder than right, and then a half-second later it's the right side that's darker/redder than the left, etc. I woul dimagine that the halves of the frame could be matched up, but I wouldn't expect the process to be easy or trivial.

From some of the sample video I've seen, the HD100 is capable of producing some decent footage.

I have never tried once and can only go on other user's comments and some example video that's available on the net.

What surprises me is JVC's stance on the split screen issue! I'm sure this topic has been beat to death, but to claim the camera does not have a defect! Oh come on... That's an equivalent to having an audio abnormality that can only be heard during soft passages. So their solution would be to always have your audio cranked at all times masking any low level audio issues.

I can understand the processor overhead argument as to why they choose to use two to handle quantizing the CCDs, but for the life of me, I can't understand why they would choose to split the screen into two halves instead of just interleaving the screen so that each would handle every other column. It would seem to me that this would tend to hide most of the differences that seem to be giving everyone so much grief.

Well I don't know... on cheaper audio-gear, you have more noise in soft passages. So: no split screen if you pay tenfold? besides, it seems quite akward to (re)create the SSE, and isn't available under most circumstances...

*Anything* can be fixed in post. But, is it worth the time and expense? I guess that all depends...

I read an article on Fahrenheit 911 talking about the scene where the president was making funny faces at the camera in the oval office just seconds before addressing the nation about the war. When they found the clip on the internet it was very low quality -- as in 320x240 resolution and only 12fps. From this download clip, they eventually cranked out a 1080P/24fps version, which doesn't stand out in any obvious way than any other part of the film (which was largely shot on various HD video cameras, including Sony F950).

For a high profile project with virtually unlimited resources, I guess it was worth it.

Good point, but in my opinion $6,000.00 is not cheaper gear in my book. Especially since much cheaper gear does not have a split screen issue. Of course I realize the problem is due to how they are sampling the CCD.

Regardless, I find it hard to believe they could not come up with a solution when engineering the camera.

Will the HVX200 have this issue? I don't believe I've read any reports on the Canon H1 having this issue.

Well, by cheap I don't mean the $10.000 that it costs over here in Europe, I'm just making a reference to the price of the other full-resolution progressive HD camcorders (Varicam, Cinealta...). The JVC is defenately cheap in comparison...

I hear ya. This problem would be an issue with any camera, regardless if it's SD or HD.

Really? What are the other full resolution progressive 1/3” HD cameras out there without the split issue?

Do you think it was because JVC takes pleasure in shooting themselves in the foot then?

The HVX200 will most likely not have the split issue, because it will not most likely not have full HD resolution CCD’s.
The XL-H1 is an interlaced camera like the Z1, and the problem is only an issue with progressive full resolution small HD sensors.

I also passed on the HD100 because of the split issue. But you have to be realistic about the problem, and it’s good to do your home work before posting nonsense.

I can't answer that question, :) but it still goes back to: "This problem would be an issue with any camera, regardless if it's SD or HD"

Believe me , I'm not knocking the JVC, It's a decent camera. In fact, I was considering purchasing one but decided against it due to the SSE problem.
Somehow I feel I'm not the only one....
