Can the chinese battery explode like this?

A factory making Panasonic battery in china has different quality control than a battery made in some local factory that makes replicas.

Everything is made in China, it's just a matter of quality control. The ones approved by Panasonic is definitely better quality. Remember GH1 body is made in China also. I wonder GF1 would be too.

Proprietary batteries are created to make money.
They are also created to preserve brand value. If customer puts an unsafe battery in their camera, and the battery explodes, the resulting bad press (and unfortunate customer experience) will harm Panasonic's valuable brand much more than it will harm the nonexistant brand of the battery vendor.

It also prevents manufacturers from making cheaper and better batteries...see DVXUser battery. Fail.

They are also created to preserve brand value.

Methinks just an impression of brand value is created. Ben is right; can you imagine their embarrassment when they see a less expensive and better product?

This is no different than proprietary accessory shoes, memory slots, ink cartridges, or razor blades. And, of course, they retain the right to manufacture these items as they wish; however, telling me its for my safety while they're gouging me to "preserve brand value" is simply adding insult to injury.
