is there a way to shoot in 720x576?

No, it would be impossible unless they released a firmware update and even then I think it would have to crop an extreme portion of the sensor.

Why would you want to acquire in SD PAL these days?

if I really needed that, I'd shoot 1080p and downscale in post

thanks for the replies. well, i still get some projects where i need to shoot on PAL 720x576 in 4:3 ratio, hence the question.

Yeah, what Samuel H says, the only option is to shoot in 1080p/25 and downsample.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think if you've got Magic Lantern installed you can use a custom 4:3 frameline guide to aid with composition before cropping.
