Can someone update me on RED (specifically 'Scarlet')? - I've been out of the loop...

I've been out of the loop for a while - does the RED Scarlet still exist? Has it been replaced with something else? The last I heard was something to do with HDR cinematography...or something?

Thanks in advance to any replies :)

Yes. Now has HDRx. Price has gone up for the 8X fixed. It is done. Footage was posted today from it actually. Waiting for Japan parts that are non-existent due to tsunami. Cinema is unknown. Epic-S (formerly scarlet s35) is unknown.

to put it bluntly, they failed to deliver everytime they made an estimate as to when it would ready. The camera is still vapor ware as far as im concerned. it's not for purchase YET, But I guess there is a working prototype. The funny part is the 8x model will use a 2/3rds inch sensor. I dont know anyone right now that would go back to shooting with a small sensor after using a large one. Might be fine for an eng shooter, but Im not sure why you would go with the formfactor for that type of shooting. A proper shoulder mounted camera would be the most appropriate. But hey, they dropped the ball on the low end products. Now the epic, I admit is a badass camera done right, it delivers a nice image. Not as nice as alexa, but nice. It too was very late.

Don't hold your breath.

If you need a camera right now, buy one from a reputable company that is delivering cameras today.

Well, depends on what you mean by "does it exist"? Because if you mean -- did it ever get released so you can buy it, then the answer is still no.

If you mean -- was the Scarlet line cancelled, then no, it wasn't. It was split in two. The large sensors are now part of the Epic line, and the smaller 2/3" sensor is now known as Scarlet. Scarlet is only 2/3" and there will be no large-sensor Scarlets. Anything with a 35mm-sized or above sensor, is an Epic.

still waiting on that 2/3" fixed scarlet. been through two cameras already, possibly a third. :D

Red takes a lot of crap over Scarlet; meanwhile they've released some products that are real game changers. Scarlet will get here... eventually. I expect that when it does, it will be a sensation. There's nothing in the pipeline that offers what the latest working prototype offers at anywhere near the price point.

Red went in through the back door, eventually feeding us normal consumers too, but again don't hold your breath. In a business perspective they've done the right thing, but I feel kinda sad for all the people keeping their savings awating some kind of undefiable awesomeness. I bet there's even people who lost what interest they had in filmmaking just participating in the waiting game.

Red will deliver, just don't sit on your fat ass in the meantime.

A few days ago Jarred posted a pic on his facebook. Caption was "Army of Scarlets getting ready for battle...." and shot showed a table full of them

edit:
and today JJ posted
"2. Lens issues with Fixed Scarlet. We have lens production issues that need to be resolved before we can begin production. My bet is September."

The idea of waiting for a specific piece of gear to hit the market's been discussed ad nauseum 'round here. Doesn't seem to be a philosophy embraced by those actually working with gear for a living though.

I figure if I can get the quality I've learned to produce from the HMC150 - with some difficult effects shoots and some really happy clients - advances in sensors and compression will just be icing on the cake. Anyone waiting to buy a cam since Scarlet was first announced has gone what - three years? - without shooting a single frame. To me that says "hobbyist" or someone in a related field wanting to expand into video, not a working pro.

LOL..
Don't hold your breath. This has been coming for almost 4 years?
I respect RED engineers. Great people. Never bought RED ONE, but I know someone who owns it.
I'm just amazed how this is dragged on and on and on and on...............................................................................................................................................................................................................

I gotta be honest, I can't help but feel that RED is very "elitist". RED definitely isn't for the true indie/student filmmaker. It's simply too expensive. The Scarlet fixed-lens might cater, but with HDRx, I think it's gonna be somewhere in the $5000USD+ range, if not much more. But I'm just speculating. Guess that's all you can do with vaporware.

Who buys fixed lens cameras in this day and age? My bet for Scarlet release is fall 2012 and it will fail. DSLR's came and changed the industry forever. It's too late for Scarlet. Indie film makers are happy with DSLR's and the next step up from RED is EPIC-S (if that's still coming) and I do'nt see many people taking that route since the body will cost at least 20x more than 550D for example. Not even talking about the 2000€ SSD drives you need for recording your footage plus all other very expensive additions that are needed.

It might not fit your needs but it will fit the needs of a lot of people. Not everyone is an indie filmmaker, especially not the professionals Scarlet 8x is aimed at in first place (ENG). I never understood why so many people want RED to fail. If you don't want or need their cameras, don't bother.
