Hello,

Can someone recommend a good tripod for the canon 7d?

My weight limitations are minimal for the tripod.

A tripod that is sturdy but easy to fit into a backpack are high on my requisites.

Budget would be 300 to 400 bucks.

Let me know what everyone is using and likes.

Thanks,

Simon

Sturdy stabilization device that fits in a backpack for $400? You'll need to pass on a tripod and settle for a monopod.

Good luck, Michael

You should look on Ebay for a baby baby Sachtler. Maybe more than 400 bucks but worth it. They last for ever and never leak. If you decide to sell it you might even make money on the deal after 10 years of use. Just think of anything else you ever bought that is worth the same money you forked out after 10 years.

What is everyone's obsession around here with these huge expensive cinema class tripods? For a 7D no less. I shoot on a Manfrotto with a fluid head using an XHA1 and it does me just fine. I've had this tripod for 10+ years. I think it ran $300-400 when I bought it. It won't fit in a backpack, but I can easily swing it around with one hand when it's all folded up.

You bring up a point, you can't get a cinema-grade tripod for $400. However I picked up Cartoni Action DV on eBay for $400 or so, it's of high quality and would be a great choice. It's light, too. The 75mm bowl head is nice for quick leveling, and any Cartoni fluid head is SMOOTH!!

Hello,

Thanks for all the good information.

I forgot to mention the had needs to be able to rotate 90 degrees for portrait shots.

Is that standard in most tripods?

If I don't need it to fit in a backpack, what are my options for 400 bucks?

Thanks again,

Simon

Rotating to portrait is definitely NOT something a high end video head is designed to do.

You may be able to find some sort of rotating 1/4-20 bracket to accomplish this. There are flash brackets that rotate the camera for portrait mode, I'd look around B&H for ideas.

But in all my years of photographic experience I've NEVER shot vertical portraits from tripod. Hand held every time.

hmm! That is interesting. I am new to photography so good to know the portrait mode for a tripod is not common.

Thanks,

Simon

It's common on a still tripod, but not the stuff these guys are recommending to you. Honestly for $400 get yourself a Manfrotto with a head for stills and fluid head for video.

I went through this same thing only a little while ago. Just set a budget and get what you can get. If you can afford to wait, then setup a search on ebay and it'll let you know everyday what new items have shown up that fits your criteria. That's what I did.

Hello,

So what did you end up getting "meauounji"?

Manfrotto is not bad. I will check them out.

Monopods are good for still photos but I guess not very ideal for video work?

Is this assumption correct?

Thanks,

Simon
