Can I use the DVX for video chat?

I built a new computer recently, but I didn't add an webcams or microphone software. My question is can use the DVX and an external microphone for video chat, specifically Skype?

Yes. The DVX100 hooked up via FW400 can be used (and looks so much better than everybody elses super wide angle auto iris web cams). When you get the window asking for permission to access your camera you should have the option to select the connected DVX. Not sure if you could hook a mic to DVX and do audio that way, may have to hook mic to audio-in on the computer.

thanks, and whast is the ccomputers audio size? Is it 1/4? or 1/8? Is there XLR to either of those? If it's too difficult I might just have to buy a computer mic.

The FireWire connection carries audio and video together.

I've used the DVX for teleconferencing with iChat and it worked perfectly. Plus, having the XLR ins on the camera allowed me to add some mic coverage on the room (we had about 15 people on our end) very easily (a few mics around the room, through a mixer and into the camera). The only thing you have to watch out for is looping in the audio signal. I connected the computer's audio out (headphone/speaker) to a small PA system in the room and tuned it to avoid feedback.

You know, this is really awesome. I never knew it was possible, and may be reason enough to take my DVX off the market. I need to check, but if there's a market for broadcasting weddings live for non-present friends and family members, the DVX might fit the niche extremely well. I'd expect it to work the same as any webcam with a web streaming application. Could be a big money maker; I don't see why you couldn't charge $500 for a ceremony broadcast. Two of those and the camera is more than paid for!

Aschear,

Are still out there? I'm interested in using my DVX100A to "stream" but haven't done this before. Sounds to me like you sort of used yours for the same thing. I'm looking for some basic tips and could use some advice. If you have time, would you please get back to me?

Hey Alex,

Are you out there? I've never used the DVX100A for streaming. I assume you plugged your DVX into your PC, right? If so, where did you get your camcorder to PC cable? Was it a Firewire to Firewire? I'd appreciate any info you might be willing to provide.

There are literally hundreds of software options for streaming. Each one is going to be slightly different. The DVX connection is the easiest part. Connect Firewire to camera, connect firewire to computer, turn computer on, turn camera on. They are now connected.

What do I need to do to my DVX100? Since I wouldn't be using any tape, what do I need to do to pass the images thru it and into my PC? Do I need to change any settings in the DVX? Thanks for responding.

Yes Kgimedia, it worked so far and thank you. Did as you said and connected the 100A to my laptop's firewire port and routed video into Windows Movie Maker. I assume if it does the latter, streaming video to something like You Stream TV should work as well. Sound right?

Not necessarily. This is where things start to get software specific, and I know from personal experience that just because the computer sees an incoming video source doesn't mean the software will. SO you're going to have to spend some quality time with the "support" page of whatever software you'll be using, such as http://helpcenter.ustream.tv/content/recommended-cameras-and-equipment

What the Captain says is correct but I would try Ustream first then go to support if it does not work. I use Ustream Producer on the Mac all the time and it worked fine with my DVX. HVX is a bit more complicated because it does not stream firewire in Native mode.
