Many things. See post #5 for a list of various options besides P2 cards.

DV Tape = standard-def DV and that's all.

Got it!!

thats where a FS-100 would come in, its a hard drive that you connect the the hvx using firewire. It is battery powered, and can mount to your camera (with the right accesories). Keep in mind though, that it cost around $2,000.

also, if you go the P2 route, you will need some kind of device that will read the card, and transfer the data to a hard drive. You can use the camera as a P2 reader, but that will really slow your production down, having to stop every ten minutes or so to connect your camera to your computer, and offload the footage.

The P2 store is expensive (around $1,800), and plain P2 readers are even more expensive. If you have a laptop with a PCMCIA slot, that would probably be your best bet.

One more thing to keep in mind: HD footage takes up a lot of space. You will need a large enough HD to store or archive your raw footage.

Hope this helps.

Arrh mate it does!! See i'm reading that you can only store 8mins of footage on the lowest priced P2 card. I can afford the FS-100 and HVX mount. Tell me how much footage (approx.) as in duration could you capture on this FS-100 unit!!??? See this might well not be the cam, for me, i'll openlly admit it's a little more complex than i thought at first! :)

The FS100 holds I think 100GB, which will give you about 12x the numbers I posted above.

However, when it fills, you need to dump it somewhere, which can be very time-consuming (we're talking hours, likely). So to get more space, you need ANOTHER FS-100. If you go with a laptop, you can swap cheap FW or USB harddrives when one fills up.

What makes me nervous about the FS100 (or laptop) approach is that there's no backup, and noe of these seem quite flawless just yet. This is an issue for live event work, especially long-form. I myself capture long-form to hard drives via laptops frequently, and have not had any major problems... but I always have a tape in the DVX recording as well. Anything involving a computer can have problems when you least expect it. I'd feel nervous, to say the least, capturing anything long-form, live, and critical on the HVX as the only camera (at least, until the CinePorter comes out, at which point I can have two devices (CP and Fs-100 or laptop) recording HD.

Of course, I'm paranoid - but in about 1,300 projects so far, I've NEVER (yet) had to tell a client "sorry - I didn't get that".
