"Can anything save Sony?"

What's left to make that consumers want or isnt already dominated by Apple, Samsung, LG, Netflix, how long should I make this list....

It will take time to win back the consumer level because of apple, LG, Samsung, Google. The only thing that made me buy a sony consumer product is that the Sony 4k content player will only work on Sony 4k tvs. Won't work on any other 4k tvs. Awesome TV. You see Sony on a professional level, stepping up finally and bringing prices closer to what the market is now. Just takes time, hope they keep pushing forward consumer and professional levels.

Sony Pro was terrible a few years back now they seem to be pushing out strong products for broadcast, thier playground . Cinema another issue (wtf with the F65 ?) .

However like Kodak none of this can change the fundamentals, they need mass appeal in the consumer market where the big bucks are to stay afloat and their current successes in pro market will not keep them from sinking without mass consumer sales.

Is anyone buying Sony other than pros ?

Consumer Electronics is a tough market now. Phones have become a winner take all battlefield where Apple and Samsung are now on top with phones and tablets leaving the old leaders like Nokia and Blackberry barely alive. Consumer cameras like point and shoots are a fraction of the market that they once were for all the players. DSLRs are still ok, but that's Canon and Nikon's turf. For TVs most people have already upgraded to HD and that market is very competitive with slim margins as a result. Personal audio has been sucked up into the phone market and home systems isn't a big enough category to keep a big company like Sony afloat even if they did dominate it. PC sales are down for consumers and the people that do own them are keeping them longer. Power users who upgrade more often are either on Macs or building their own PCs, so again another market that is shrinking for Sony. Game consoles are also on the decline with casual gaming shifting to other platforms. The overall CE market sucks and even within that Sony is doing worse than they should be.
Sony was known as the innovator and the company that would make the best products. The walkman was amazing when it came out. Trinitron was the standard that everyone else aimed for. Playstation. Sony today just isn't the one making breakthrough products in the consumer space. The stuff they are working on just seems too little too late. A credit card replacement? Apple Pay is already doing that. Interactive glasses? Google Glass is already on it. It seems like they're still running a little backwards with engineers figuring out how to make something whether anyone needs it or not. Sony makes something and then tries to get you to use it. Apple takes the things we do every day and makes them so easy that you can't think of how you did it before. Sony used to do that with the Walkman and making your music portable. Color TV. Gaming. I really hope that Sony finds their way back to making the world a better place instead of just churning out stuff.

[h=1]Samsung Reports Lowest Profit in 3 Years - NYTimes.com[/h]http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/30/business/samsung-reports-lowest-profit-in-3-years.html?_r=0

Reports I've seen show that the imaging (camera/video) part of Sony is doing fairly well, especially the sensor business.
Now, that's probably a rather small part of Sony as a whole...

hopefully Sony's pro video division will be bought by some other company. Great article. Wondering how SonyGate or Interviewgate has further hurt Sony.

Or how "InterviewGate" was the best free guerrilla marketing in 2014... :cheesy:

I think their biggest problem is their general reliance on the old Japanese mode of doing business. The Japanese car manufacturers have become part of the "local scene" but their electronic giants are still run from Japan (Sony Pictures aside). With the consumer electronics market largely taken over by the Chinese at the low end and the Koreans at the middle and high, there's very little left for the Japanese and their high cost products. Other once dominant Japanese manufacturers of note from the years past like Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Sanyo and Pioneer have had to drop a lot of lines or move out of certain markets entirely.

The Chinese are moving toward a complete automation/robotization of the manufacturing process in order to avoid losing their cost advantage to poorer countries like Malaysia and Vietnam. The Japanese have essentially no ability or willingness to do so.

PS. I am old enough to remember customers laughing at these "new" Korean brands Gold Star and Samsung back in the 80's when the American names like RCA, GE, Zenith, Magnavox and Sylvania were still selling well. Both Korean lines were deemed entry-level low-quality products. (Gold Star has become LG after a corporate merger/change) Current markets leaders have no innate power to prevent themselves from suffering the same fate. A few missteps - and an unfavorable business climate - is all it takes
