C100: Can anyone post 10sec clips of C100 and C300 for testing purposes.

Is anyone still using C100 and C300 with all of these new camera releases taking place. I am thinking that for run and gun documentary production that those two cameras may still fit the bill for quick output productions and I would like to download some straight from camera clips for review of in camera results. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

What do you mean is anyone still using these cameras? Do you have any idea as to how popular they are?

I can point you in the right direction. Go to the very first post in this forum and speed read them. There have been many posts of footage.

Haha Ned I should have worded that a little better. What I meant is that it seems like the gh4 and a7s seem to be the hot cameras at the moment in terms of buzz but I see people posting less of these slightly older cameras. I know that the c100 was very popular for the dslr to better upgrade croud and the c300 seems out of my budget so I was wondering what type of file fidelity I could get straight out of camera and not graded. Thinking to make an addition to my gear but I am shying away from getting another dslr type camera and hoping it will be something it is not.

Samir, I remember you from the Reduser forums. Didn't you buy a Scarlet? Well, I just sold my Scarlet to buy the C100 and let me tell you the image is just as beautiful as the Scarlet, maybe even better (my opinion) when comparing HD to HD. That and it's such a joy to shoot with. I know the GH4 and A7s are getting lots of press but once you shoot with a non DSLR it's hard to go back to the DSLR format IMO. I debated over getting the C300, but if you don't care about client perception, the IQ from the C100 is equal to the C300 with a Ninja attached. If you have some fussy clients who care about what camera you use and want internal higher bit rates then go with the C300, but the price difference is a tough pill to swallow. I love the C100 and don't miss the Scarlet at all! Cheap media, batteries that cost a few bucks and last all day. Really, I haven't stopped smiling since I got it.

This is the footage I downloaded when deliberating over the camera. I ran that waterfall footage through Davinci and also a simple Filmconvert preset and was really impressed.

Thanks mrl72. Yep I still have my Scarlet and love it but was thinking of adding the C100 (I feel like I would probably use it more since it looks more like a grab and go type camera with huge battery life and cheap media but without the shortcomings of DSLR) I don't need the C300. Was thinking I would probably go with the internal codec for now and wait til they release the ninja star to use with the C100. I know a lot of people complained about the evf being subpar but I wouldn't be using for mission critical stuff or client work just my own videos mainly and for faster workflow than a RED. And I like being able to hold a camera up directly to my eye like a DSLR but I hate using a zacuto loop on a dslr for video. It's one more thing you have to remember to bring with you.

Thats exactly why I sold my Scarlet. I didn't need the 4K and since I was using an Epic for most of my stuff, and the Scarlet for personal projects, I found I was leaving the Scarlet in the case and taking the 5D out for smaller stuff. I do have the loupe on the C100 but only use it in really sunny conditions. I don't use the EVF at all. It really is crappy, but others can comment on how it is with the addition of a better eye cup.

I feel that the C-Cup doesn't really do enough. It's nice, but I still don't trust the EVF at all. Only really good for framing - not focus or exposure.

Forget the Ninja Star. It only has Micro HDMI ports which are terrible and it uses expensive proprietary flash media. Better to get the Ninja Blade since it has a usable high-rez monitor and uses cheaper and bigger SSD drives. Regular HDMI is dicey enough as it is. I wouldn't trust micro HDMI for critical work. Besides, the internal AVCHD in the C100 is actually pretty good.

Hey Samir,

I'd say you'd be very happy with a C100 IF you have an onboard recorder for 4:2:2. The AVCHD codec is its Achilles heel. otherwise it's a fantastic model. I directed a several day job and hired a DP who owned a Scarlet. We needed to do several locations a day including company moves. There's no way to express how much more agile and quick you can work with a C100 or 300. Forget the eyepiece though, its useless even with an add on. I have a DP4.

As to popularity: One thing I've learned about DVXUSER forums is that there is an arc to the postings. When a model first comes out there's an intense amount of interest, questions, postings of examples, gripes, add on issues, etc. then after a year or two it peaks and then all the early adopters are satisfied, using that model regularly and have no need to check in with that forum unless they are curious or bored (me). So when something new comes along all the interest goes to that forum. However, it does not necessarily mean it's better.

So in sum, the model best for you depends on what kind of gigs you plan to do with it, how fast you need to move, what kind of budgets you're dealing with, your client base (pixel peepers?), affordability of add ons, etc. To me, as a freelance DP who has to have several models to satisfy different client bases, the camera that has paid for itself and is being used the most days is the best camera there is. It's the one that makes the most money.

Best regards,

Ned

I`ve shot projects on the C300 and own the C100. Between the two, the C300 is much easier to nail focus with on the run and the codec is ready to edit. For me the C100 does the job.

For a recent commercial though, I somehow thought I needed a "proper cinema camera". So we went Epic ;)
One scene was in the hallway of a hospital. The gaffer suggested to just change all existing bulbs and fluorescents. I wanted to see how it looked and we shot some tests with the C100.
Later to my eye, the images of the Epic and the C100 looked on par.
The C100 didn´t have wireless FF and me instead of the actor, but besides that, too similar to say "oh, this must be from the Epic for sure".
In the end the proper focus and exposure, the acting and grading/secondary in post will make the difference, so for the cost of the Epic rental, I could have bought the Ninja Blade and probably achieved a similar result.
Well, that´s of course just my very subjective non-techie view of basic image quality of the C100;)
But when it comes to one-man-crew docu style shooting, I would`t even consider another option than a C-series camera anymore.

Any one of you used fs700? How does image compare to C100, C300 when using s-log2? Is it really a lot worse with ergonomics or people are exaggerating a little bit? I was decided for C100 but though of fs700 as it's much better investment - it's future proofed were C100/C300 is slowly hitting end of the cycle.

I never understood the whole FS700 is "future proofed" thing. To go 4K you need a firmware upgrade, external recorder, batteries, fluffy dice, etc. By the time you get all that you might as well have sold the FS700 and bought a shiny new 4K camera at NAB2015 that will do you for a few good years.

It's not all that bad. The FS700 now comes with the firmware upgrade standard, so
you don't have to send it in for that anymore. The best external recorder is the odyssey 7q
which doubles as an external monitor (and many people are getting an external monitor
because the onboard lcd's on all these cams like FS700 and C100 are not ideal). And you can
use the same batteries that power your camera for the odyssey. Not sure why everyone assumes
there will be a new camera that does everything the FS700/7Q can do, but internally and at
a FS700 price point, at NAB 2015. Right now that camera exists as the F5/55. Will the price
for that kind of tech really come down that quick as to exist at NAB 2015? It is certainly
possible. But I wouldn't be wagering my paycheck on it, that's for sure.

I own a FS700 and have shot with a C300 on two TV shows and a major clothing brands video
promo stuff. I'd say the fs700's bad ergonomics are a little exaggerated. They are not great
though. Viewfinder where it is sucks for high angle stuff. It has a bad rep for a reason.

C300 is really nice in that it has a better in camera codec (still 8 bit though). C100 uses same codec
as FS 700. So if you are getting an external recorder with it.....well the FS700 with Odyssey will kick the
C100 all up and down the street. It will actually even beat the C300, but again this is with
an external recorder. So it all depends on what you want. The FS700 is more versatile for sure.
but has its trade offs.

Thanks everyone that chimed in on this thread. Will look into the ninja blade first and then probably will pull the trigger on a c100. I have also been leaning towards the GH4 to play around with in the interim but it seems it's impossible to get one in stock from the major outlets.
