I tend to leave the strap on my DSLR's because I'm a little clumsy... But it's obviously a pain in the @$$ to take it on and off the camera when going between my shoulder rig, slider etc... But if I'm doing some gorilla handheld stuff I like it because it makes me feel more secure lol. Question is... does anyone use the damn thing? I feel like I need to get over it and just toss it in my junk drawer... or figure out a quick release option because I personally feel it's getting in the way more than it's helping. Just trying to get anyone else's opinion...

If you must have a strap use a Black Rapid or Sun Sniper. I got the Sun Sniper because that is the one they had in stock that day at Calumet. My monopod and the tripod I use with my DSLR both use the Manfrotto 200PL-14 Plate. This allows me to connect directly to plate. I also created a connection with a simple D Ring that I attached to my monopod. The whole thing, with camera, hangs at my side ready for action.

Good call, I was looking at the Black Rapid, I use the Manfrotto 501 Sliding plate for mine since I share all my gear with my HVX as well... Have you used it with a battery grip before?

Just a thought: why not put some sort of clip on the rigs to hold the strap out of the way, rather than taking it off?

Yes I was going to mention this and remembered not everyone has a battery grip. Mine has an attachment point for a strap on the bottom. I used a wire tie through the attachment point then attached my Sun Sniper to that. This allowed me to use the larger Manfrotto plate for my 501 as well. The number on reason I love this strap is it puts the camera out of my way when around my neck. Not bouncing against my chest. The strain on my neck and build-up off sweat on a long hot day is greatly reduced as well.

I hate straps. They get caught and I have done more damage to my gear with them then without.

They do make handheld a little better if you dont have any thing better so YMMV

I use mine tight against my neck with arms outstretched.

I do something like that. I pull against the strap, that is around my neck, then bring my elbows in real tight and rest the back of my upper arms on my chest. I can shoot pretty stable that way, even with all manual lenses. I am pretty steady that way up to about a 35mm lens. North of that, and I have to go with stabilization to stand to watch the footage. I have been hand holding "Handi-cam" style camcorders for a long time, and have gotten pretty decent at it, if I say so myself. The strap-elbows thing works pretty good, for me, with the DSLR form factor.

I... carry mine on a strap. So if I see something cool when I'm walking around I can shoot it. I'm usually more steady with my own hands than pulling the strap against my neck.

Video = no strap, my GH2 and T3i are both strapless, and there's a pretty good chance it's already mounted to a tripod or monopod.
Photography = strap always.

Same like Kin. I have one of those straps that connects via the tripod mounting screw on the bottom. I always use that for photos. For video, the strap is always removed (and those metal clasps on the strap holes for the GH2 annoyed me so much until I removed them).

However, I did use my strap for this video because I was packing lightly and didn't want to lug a tripod around. So I pushed the camera out away from my body until the strap was pulled tight to get these shots on my 60D:

Hah, I'd say yes - it's definitely saved me more than been a problem. Only time I have an issue is on a slider.. in that case I just wrap up the strap, velcro it and tuck it somewhere.

Its cool to see these other options, never looked at other straps.. since you know the huge black/red strap with CANON on it is soooo cool :D

Does anyone still wrap the strap around their hand and shoot that way? All you retards of course.

For photo's, I'll often pull the strap up behind my elbow, and wrap it once around my forearm which makes it nice and tight when I grip the camera.

Custom wrist strap with quick release ... yes. Neck strap, hell no.

I think it is dangerous even to describe it as a neck strap - long camera straps should be put over the shoulder

Carrying a heavy body round the neck can cause nerve damage, or injury in (for example) a mugging

.. and no I don't use one for stills or motion

..except twice a year when I shoot stills at a wedding
