Camera settings that affect the recorded footage

My logging footage in Finalcutpro. The setting was the correct Anamorphic setting as demonstrated (link here to youtube video) but in the editing window when I open the logged footage, there are still black bars. The problem must have been on the camera setting.

Panasonic DVX100. It was shot in 16:9, letter box.

Does the Camera setting of letterbox affect the recorded footage or is that only for the option of the cam op?

There's your answer.

If you shot in letterbox mode, you have the black bars. That's the way it goes, as "letterbox" is actually a 4:3 image. You have to shoot in "Squeeze" mode on the DVX to get true anamorphic 16:9. If you're shooting on the original DVX100 (as opposed to the 100A or 100B) you do not have this option. Furthermore, if you shot in letterbox, you should not capture with "anamorphic" checked in your clip logging.

You can still get 16:9 out of this, but it requires cropping the 4:3 image to get rid of the black bars, and enlarging the remaining image to fill the 16:9 frame. This will cause a slight hit on resolution.
