Thanks Jeffey :)
For some reason I thought the hmc would be much smaller then the xh a1.
Sold mine a few months ago, I miss it, But I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with the HCM 150.

looks like the 150 is much better in low light by these comparisons.

It is a significant step up from the XH-A1 in sensitivity and reduced noise. These screen shots don't fully replicate the difference.

In regular daylight shooting, the HMC150 also needs the ND filter turned on much sooner and higher than the XH-A1. Now I understand why it has a third ND filter setting vs the XH-A1s two settings.

Everts:

That is exactly what I thought and why I posted these pictures of the A1 & HMC150.

About the XH-A1: I really like mine and was thinking about sending the HMC150 back. I have gotten some really amazing footage out of the A1 and I really liked the Vivid RGB preset. Then I did a series of test shots, some of which are above, and rendered a test video after shooting the exact same scenes with both cameras side by side. After looking at the video, the HMC150 is easily the winner for me. It excels in just too many areas over the A1. Yes, the A1 does have some strong points like the 20X lens and audio AGC and is a little more idiot proof. But, Im selling the A1 as quickly as possible.

Prepare to be confounded by Panasonic controls for a while.

On the outdoor shots, the colors are brighter and richer on the HMC-150 when compared to the A1. The A1's images seen flat and a bit dark.

This is like the shots Berry Green posted a while back of the H1 (A1 ???) vs. the HMC-200 camera, the Canon's images looked a bit muddy compared to the Panasonic.

The noise level for low light is clearly higher in the A1 compared to the HMC-150. It's hard to tell form a still frame that's been reduced in size, but the image noise in the HMC-150 +12dB shot isn't too bad.

If might be fun to try an outdoor night shot of a street to see how the cameras compare.

Hey Jeff thanks for the pics! I too thought the 150 was smaller & lighter!! Is it as heavy as it looks?

I know that I can push the Canon A1 footage pretty severely in post (CC, Gamma & curves) I wonder if the same could be said for the AVCHD footage?

Also nobody has mentioned anything about the auto focussing, I remember the DVX's AF in the progressive modes was the slowest I'd ever seen, how is it on the 150?

The HMC150 seems about a pound lighter than the DVX100B, much more comfortable to hold for longer periods. The AF is slow on the 150 too.

Thanks Johnnyha, it's a good thing to know about the weight because I intend of replacing my HV30 with the 150 on my Glidecam and the lighter it is the longer I can shoot with it. Never mind about the auto-focus - us Canon users have been really spoilt by it's Instant AF, oh well I guess it's still better than having no AF.

The AF on the 150 is fast and accurate in 1080i. You never notice it. I would say it's about the same as the XH-A1.

HMC150 focus observations: When the 150 pans by something close like a tall weed it tends to stay on focus where the A1 quickly grabs the close focus and then goes back to target. I could see this yesterday with the cameras side by side doing a pan on the beach behind some beach grass.

The reson why the focus take so long when shooting progressive is that its only getting information even 25th/30th as opposed to shooting interlaced where its getting information twice as fast and will therefore focus twice as fast.

How does that explain Canon being faster?

Does the HMC150 not have any AGC for audio? If i remeber correctly there is a setting named ALC, isn't that the same thing? (I think ALC is an acronym for Auto Level Control, i am not sure though...)

Can the HMC-150 flip the image back to normal when using a 35mm adapter? (SGPro) I've been wondering this for awhile. Wondering if I should buy the SG Flip or not.
