Camera is uncomfortable to hold..and LCD angle = ugh

Maybe it's just me (coming from a DVX/A1/FX1) but this cam gives me more hand fatigue when holding it despite being lighter. Do I need to "break in the strap"? lol

Also, I can't believe how picky the angle of the LCD in this thing is! I got used to the tiny LCD on the A1 and the easy to look at screen for the FX1 (since it's eye level).

Gonna take some time to get used to these changes.

Just griping ;)

I have to agree with you.

My FX-1 is easier on my hand but that's not to say that the 150 hurts me but I would have thought that a lighter camera would have felt better than my Sony.
I really think it has much more to do with the palm rest than the weight.

The LCD is one of the weak points of the 150 to me because the LCD on the FX-1 / Z-1 is pretty darn good.
Once I find the right angle [no pun intended] the 150's LCD is okay but the viewing angle is rather limited.

agreed, plus I would have liked the record button a little bit closer to my index or ring finger when handheld.

I suppose it all comes down to how much one wants to shoot hand held.
Typically on a wedding shoot, i'd be 75% tripod, 15% glidecam and 10% handheld.

Generally, the "money shots" don't come when one holds the camera.
Ergonomically speaking, the difference between the DVX and HMC should be negligable.

really? Weird.. I didn't think it was all that different than the DVX..

Maybe there is no longer a tape drive where the palm rests so the weight is distributed elsewhere making it balance less well?

Try handholding hvx 200 and then a Sony EX-1 and then see how the 150 feels in your hand.

That's a really true statement there! An EX1 will really make your arm go numb and the 200 allowed me to bulk up from shooting so much with me. Personally I hated the layout of the A1 and Sonys just really always leave me feeling a bit cold. I guess it's cause I used an XL1 for years and that was about as bad to shoot handheld as possible.

Personally I have had no problem whatsoever. Do some more of these maybe?

Please explain to me how holding an EX1 or HVX200 or doing bench pressing will increase the comfort in my hand?

Those are the most funniest replies I've gotten.

My strength is not an issue and I holding another camera won't help me with my situation (unless you meant to say "you should appreciate the form compared to XYZ camera" but that would be too easy). I would agree that the HMC150 is much easier to hold than the XL1 ;).

Anyway, I'm hoping with the extended battery that it will help the balance a small amount. I get the uncomfortableness in the front part of my hand not towards the back.

Cheers guys. You're all such a lively bunch :).

yes.. it was supposed to be a compare and contrast.. and it's just that those others mentioned are really unbalanced and hard to hold.

You are totally right about the battery leveling it out and making it easier you shoot with. You also might want to consider a shoulder supportive or a wrist supporting device.. several companies make them..

Since you have an XL1 this shouldn't be nearly as hard.. its just in finding the right balance and in holding it a baticular way.. with the XL you have to lean the hand back to balance out the enormous lens and tiny body. You'll get it figured out and also holding it by the handle sometimes works well and also cupping it for low angle shots and above stuff.

I'd say to check out the spiderbrace cause its cheap but there are a couple more options for sure.

Look at my avatar. I have no complaints. Getting used to the light weight took a while, as for handling my 150 is set up on a Cavison base with carbon rails and dual handles. I normally operate with my left hand holding the left handle and the right hand in the strap and thumb on the button. Usually use the LCD and in bright light revert to the viewfinder. This is in run and gun situations, and the same way I used my dvx100b though now focus is much more critical. Maybe you should consider a setup of somekind.

For sure the extended 5800mah battery will help to handle the camera.

The tiny battery is to avoid. It is more a backup battery or a setup battery.
