Camera Cases (by Pelican)

So, I keep seeing people wanting to buy all these fancy-shmancy cases that of course cost the fingers and toes from the arm and leg you just spent on the camera. And while I haven't looked into these cases at all (maybe they really are that good), I HAVE looked into Pelican cases. I checked one out in a sporting goods store once, and man was that thing tough- I was kickin it around the store for a good half hour before someone finally got annoyed and asked me to leave.

Seriously though.

Check out the 1650- there's big camera in it! It was meant to be!!!

You could also go to http://www.casesbypelican.com/ . I have a Pelican case for my DVX and some other stuff and I really like those cases. One for my HVX is on my list of things to get for the camera. The cases also have a unconditional lifetime guarantee.

Are these pelican cases any good to run about. I have the feeling they can only be used for travelling not for shooting on the run. Then you need a carrying bag. Does anyone have a suggestion ???

Definitely consider a Pelican hard case. They come with foam or with padded dividers. I opted for the padded dividers and made my own foam inserts to keep the equipment from moving around. I wrapped the foam blocks with a light gray fabric to match the case and to prevent potential foam dust from getting on the electronics. I'll post photos tonight.

The 1650 is very large. I wouldn't recommend it for run and gun although the 1600 may do alright. If you're constantly on the move, I'd go for a bag instead.

Another company to consider is Storm Cases.

I’ve noticed that typically film people use hard cases like the pelican or anvil, while video people use soft cases like a Kata or Portabrace. Myself I can’t imagine putting my camera in something that wouldn’t protect my DVX from getting squished. I use a Pelican knock off myself, and have never thought it a problem with portability or ease of access.

We stick our Pelicans in gym bags to throw off thieving eyes. A Pelican case announces that there is something expensive in there.

I use the pelican 1600 with foam inserts. I then drape a hankerchief over the insert to prevent any foam from possibly flaking off.

Simple, but so brilliant!

For the cost conscious out there, check out Dosko. I've only have one problem with a handle coming off before, with 5 cases and cases4less replaced it without me even sending back the old one.

That said the pelican's are really nice and can take a beating. I also stepped up for one of the branded Panasonic DVX specific cases and wasn't let down at all.

Again, Dosko is not as good as the rest, but check out the prices. Use them for your camera up front and then use them for matteboxes and such later when you upgrade. Just and idea.
