Camera broken?

I have a kind of a large problem with my new camera. I live in norway and there is about 0-7 degrees below minus out in the evenings now. I cycled with the camera to a friend of mine and when we started recording we got the message "use cleaning cassette" or something. The camera had just been running for about 1-2 hours before this and it was only a couple of weeks old. There were also some large grey stripes over the screen, but the problem stopped and the recording worked fine. Next time we were filming outside (-6 C) and we discovered that none of what we recorded came on the tape and it was imposible to playback the tape (showing only a blue screen with a tape running). When the camera came back in room temperature, it worked fine after a while (the gray stripes appared at first). Now, a few days later, it is impossible to either record or playback the tape at any temperature! Is the camera broken or do I have to use a cleaning cassette as the message said? PS: The camera has been very gentle used.
