Calculating FOV for comparison between AF100/F3/16mm/D7000/F900R

Hi guys,

I'm doing a workshop next week where we are comparing the AF100 to the Sony F3, Super 16mm film, Sony F900R (2/3" sensor), and a Nikkon D7000 (hopefully). We will be recording the Af100 and the F3 to their respective media cards, as well as through HD-SDI to an HDCAM deck. The F900R will record to its internal HDCAM tape, and of course the Super 16mm will be on film.

The purpose is to show the differences between each format and to also see if externally recording to HDCAM is better than the internal codecs on the 2 digital cameras.

I've been tasked with calculating the distance we need to place each camera from the subject to maintain the same field of view. In rehearsal I framed up the subjects using the AF100 with a 85mm Nikon lens. The camera was 23 feet away so that would mean the FOV was (16:9): 4' 10" x 2' 8"

I'm having trouble calculating the distance on the other formats to maintain that same FOV as I don't have an iPhone/iPod and can't get the PCAM application to calculate the values. So does anyone know of another application (Windows, or Online) that could preform my needed calculations? Or could give me assistance?

Thanks

Thanks guys, but I already looked at those. The AbelCine calc doesn't tell me how far away I need to place the camera to maintain the same field of view.

Again I love the chart you made Barry, but it does not tell me how far the camera needs to be to to keep the same field of view

No, it is set to show you what lenses you would use, at any given distance, to maintain the same field of view. The chart I have is designed to equate the field of view, from one specific distance (in other words, assuming that all the cameras were at the exact same distance, what lens focal length would you have to use in order to get the same field of view).

I know Mark, but i don't have any iProducts.

Ah, thank you Barry, however my DP has already picked the lenses (based on availablility) and sort of gave me this as an exercise, but also to find the distance with the required lenses.

What I need is an alternate option to PCAM that I can use without giving Apple money.

These are the lens/camera's we are using:

Sony HDW-F900R B4 2/3"CCD 9.6mm x 5.4mm
40mm

Nikon D7000 Nikon F APS-C 22.3mm x12.5mm
85mm

Sony PMW-F3 PL S35 CMOS 23.6mm x 13.3mm
85mm

Panasonic AF100 Nikon F Micro 4/3 CMOS 17.8 x 10mm
85mm

Super 16mm PL Super 16mm 11.9mm x 6.7mm 16:9
50mm
