C80 posted on Amazon

I think this will sell like hot cakes. I think the features and form factor and price are really nice for a lot of owner operators

Slam dunk. Nice features at a reasonable price. They're going to sell a lot of those.

This announcement totally came out of left field to me. Did not see this coming.

My litltle sister holds the camera out in front and wobbles it.

Why do makers think this is a 'form factor' - it makes me mad.

'Mirrorles and look in the hole works', shoulder camera works, some hasselblad gut cam works. Every other way of holding a camera is just terrible.

I guess apart from that fatal flaw this camera is excellent.
modern AF
chip matches exceptional leneses

sdi
I missed if it has any HFR
10bit medium codec (?)

Why does it always seem like you speak in Haiku form, Morgan? :)… The form factor isn’t great. If I use a bp60 battery I can hold it against my chest without crushing the monitor…

Bro, people already liked the c70. Anyone who handled that handle this. It's like that but way better. And shoots 4K120p from a 6K FF sensor. I edited a project shot on BRAW recently and I can confidently say I no longer care about recording RAW

I dont care what some insta kids who never rolled more than 8 seconds or corporate tripod junkies liked.

I only respect folk who can handhold a chat for five mins.

And then get Broll coverage for that chat in the next two. Scene, MCU, CU, OTS NSW.

As far as I know, a bunch of people on this forum have a C70. And a C80 looks way cooler to me than a C70

I have a c70, Abe. I’ve considered a c80, but I prefer the unique look the DGO sensor gives. The lure of the c80 to me is the high ISO shooting, improved AF and 6K, but the footage I’ve seen so far coming out of the c400/80 looks very pedestrian compared to the c300 mkiii/c70. There’s just something about that crop of cameras that came out from 2019-2021 (fx9,fx6. Fx3, c500mkii, c300 mkiii,c70) that are special

It appears that the shoulder mount approach has been left to Arri alone in the cinema space. I can't disagree that a shoulder mount + stabilization is very useful. But so are gimbals and running around like photo #1. Provided that IS is engaged. But shoulder mount is not small and at $5,000, I think folks want small.

I note that shoulder mount mirrorless and evf “work”

I enjoy my r6. And looking in the hole.

Its just holding cams out in front a hate. Gimbal or no.

Any time you roll for more than 20 seconds it becomes a fine torture.

Im just off to do bts on a “major motion picture” and i know it will be grabbing actor voxes - ill need to roll for five mins stable. And pop some beauty at 200mm. Horrific in “pose one” the lil sister pose.

Of course other work happens..

I think it will sell really well (but can't see me switching from the FX6). Lots of great improvements.... but surprised they have gone with SD over CFExpress (and as a result limits the frame rates you get vs the C400 in 6k). Also, a shame it they are sticking to mechanical ND Filters. The eVND on my FX6 is (for me) such a massive step up in flexibility (does Sony have a patent on eVND or something?). Not perfect, but it is great to set your shutter and iris and let the ND do the work to control the exposure. I hope this release indicates that the FX6ii is on it's way.... with IBIS and better eVND graduation at the low end.

Yeah, if history is an indicator it’s Sony’s turn at bat

@scorsesefan
I found the high ISO test comparing the C70 and C80 sensors interesting (about 10:30):

Who doesn't enjoy looking in the hole.

I'm sure that folks who have a C70 have figured out how to rig it the way they like, even if that means bare-handing it.

C80 weighs 2.8lbs. My a7siii weighs about 1.5lbs. I can rock an a7siii with minimal accessories on a lightweight gimbal all-day (or a heavier ronin-s with dual handles).

For the BTS shoot you describe, I imagine a monopod would come in handy. Sometimes I use one with the gimbal. Or just a light stand I can pop on and off from.

But speaking of hands in front of face torture, my first gig was an assistant at the documentary company that made Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. I think they shot on the hvx200... Their DP bare handed it for hours on end on verite shoots. He could also walk backwards with it at slow pace and look like a steadicam. Torture? Yes. Skills and endurance? Yes. Personally, I wouldn't want to shoot like that. But my long-duration gimbal shooting doesn't actually place much strain on my body. It's just tiring. Though to be fair I'm mostly doing short shots, even on a long shoot day.

Ah yes, 2019-2021. Those were the days. We were so young back then. I remember it like it was 3 years ago.

Just kidding.

For better or for worse, I don't care that much about the look of the cameras these days. I can't remember the last time I thought a camera looked so crappy I wouldn't want to use it. Except in the case of rolling shutter.

Of course, my main camera now is the FX3 which is on your "nice" list. But, for instance, I'd say that my a7iv looks a bit better in terms of dynamic range and possibly also color and detail. (Worse rolling shutter, of course.) But I've never once elected to use it for its quality. It's always a C camera for me and only takes the lead when I need to fine tune my shutter speed to defeat banding, a feature that has been inexplicably left off the FX3.

I look forward to an FX3 upgrade to get the latest Sony IBIS which is substantially improved, hopefully better autofocus, and shutter speed fine tuning. Anything else is gravy.

I don't see myself switching from Sony unless all the clients want some other brand camera, which I doubt will happen. And the more Sony gear I buy, the more true that becomes. Here's a selfie of me pre-ordering the 85GM ii and completing my set of GM primes 14mm - 135mm:
