C70: Mic input question

Hey all

Question about the mic input for the C70, below the mini XLRs. I just picked up a Zoom F6 recorder and I'd like to experiment with sending a feed right into the c70 instead of using a tentacle sync for some instances. Does anyone know if the mic input is line level audio or just mic level? My understanding is that if it's only mic level often you require an attenuator cable to avoid hissing.

Thanks!

Sean

Pretty sure you can change it to 'line' (it's likely 'mic' by default).

Do you have the camera to check the menu?

Mic or line. But IIRC on the 3.5mm input, line is "consumer" level, ie -12dBV, rather than +4dBV as on the mini XLRs. I haven't used the 3.5mm inputs on my C70, so I don't know how clean they are. After a bit of gain tweaking, might be OK... If not, a cable with a pad/attenuator will probably cost $20-$40. For example:

https://www.trewaudio.com/product/re...dio-ca1-8lpad/

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ef=as_li_ss_tl

Note that I haven't used either of these cables, but have a few other cables from Remote Audio and they're well made. And I think either will pad the F6 line out to a mic level the C70 3.5mm will like.

But either wait around for confirmation from someone here or poke around the internet.

Thanks for the response guys!

NorBro: it gives me the option of: Mic (Powered), Mic, Line. I'm not sure what powered means exactly here, probably not +48 phantom power?

Thanks Jim! There's a Trew audio not far from me, might be good to head over there in person and chat with them. Appreciate those links.

Some mics don't have plug-in power so the camera will power the mic for you if you choose 'Mic (Powered)'.

You'd know if your mic doesn't have power by it not working if you had the option set to 'Mic' but then it started working if you chose 'Mic (Powered)'. Be careful the other way around though as mics with power don't need more power.

It's pretty rare for 3.5mm mics not to have plug-in power these days or at least a AA battery, but they are out there.

Also, you can record on the F6, and sync up the original 32-bit files in post, right? Pluraleyes would make this a snap.
