C200: C70 — What are your thoughts?

The most popular thought after the C70 announcement is "That's a half-priced C300iii!". Cannot agree because you wouldn't have same DR in highlights with the 410 Mbps AVC vs 1 Gbps raw lite. Just look at the difference on youtube tests (C300iii owners'll approving, i guess). It's an dslr in the cinema camera body.

In other way it looks like a perfect concept of the future C70 mk ii with the onboard raw. Loving it's erginomics, size, screen and design at all. But for today a7s iii is no brainer as universal b-cam with it's 600 Mbps delivery and 12bit output.

As always: love canon's design but still buying sony(

Higher data rates are useful but won't matter if the sensor is limited (either through technology or corporate).

For the first 5 years of its existence, the most popular camera in the world with the most DR was mostly used with ProRes HQ/444 in 2K.

As far as I know DR is not directly correlated to bit rate, i.e. higher bit rates=more DR. If you're referring to noise and/or compression artifacts that's a different discussion...

I agree bit rate shouldn't effect DR. That being said one thing I know for sure that Canon would never release a dslr to undercut their cinema line. Obvious the no viewfinder or raw/prores is that line of demarcation. The question is, was that truly enough or did Canon do anything further internally to insure there is enough of a visual difference to keep C300iii users happy with their purchase and justify double the price.

Shouldn't you be comparing the C70 to the older C100 instead? That's what it is replacing.

I know that bit rate in pair with a bit depth is basically about luma&chroma subsampling and mostly affecting color gradation, but I've seen lot of tests with head to head comparison and eyes cannot lie. I think that difference is in luma compression, but maybe different encoding algorithms— i dunno, but AVC image haven't the DR of CRL in highlights. You can see this even after intervention of youtube's ugly compression.
p. s. raw lite is 12 bit vs 10 of avc

It's best to not judge DR on YouTube (even though that's all we really have) because you never know the workflow behind the images.

Also...you have to get used to the idea of cameras being limited on purpose by businessmen & women. It's never an apples-to-apples comparison.

In general, the C200 has pretty average DR by today's standards or aspirations.

And CRL is only 12-bit up to 4K/30p. It drops down to 10-bit at 4K/60p.

The camera has a 2.5mm LANC so maybe their grip can be used with it. IDK though.

Hi there,

unfortunately this doesn't work, a Youtuber who already tested the camera (Giannis Saroukos) confirmed it doesn't work... I hope there will be any other solution to this, I'd love to be able to control especially the "PUSH AF" while it's on a Ronin S, doing it with the C200 ever since which makes it really powerful for one-man-event documentation.

You'd think they would allow their own accessories to at least be compatible.

Maybe a regular remote will work unless they just completely blocked the LANC functionality for that purpose.

For those interested: The FS 5 handgrip works "good" with the C70! You can assign button 4 on the grip to whatever you need - for me Push AF when it's on a RS2. You can also use record and the joystick to maneuver in ur menu or move focus field(s). I haven't found other handgrips yet that offer other buttons then a "record" button or a dial - so as "sad" as it sounds - the Sony solution ist the best atm for this haha

Metbones has updated their EF-RF Speedbooster firmware (to 1.4) so that it works with C70 (and R5). Before the camera got crazy using it. Tried the new firmware yesterday with the C70. Works fine. AF too. (a quick test with EF 24-105 (v1)
Assigned a wheel dial on the adapter to Iris too - now it works as with an regular RF-lens - you can assign it to ISO etc as well.
Pretty sweet.

Any wide DR camera will have to be subject to a post process to show wide DR, becuase all cameras are aquiring beyond what screens can show (with reasonable contrast)

Surely you know it's the opposite? (Unless I'm misinterpreting you.)

If everyone uploaded videos in LOG without any processing straight from the cameras, you'd have the most dynamic range present on all screens.

But DR is lost in many videos after certain post-production workflows (usually by using incorrect LUTs).

Yes - kind of the opposite. Indeed it needs to be uploaded as log or as log->709 with an intelligent post process. We agree.

Overall YT is not the limiting factor.. the knowlege of uploader is. More my point maybe.
