C500: C500 Rig buildups and reviews

Regarding the amira.

It is very expensive, it doesn't come with a mount, canon mount is an extra 1180 euro, PL is 1020euro, Cfast card 60 gb costs 545euro, card reader etc etc. Adds up to a lot pretty quickly. But there still is no other option that has as much dynamic range in the highlights.

No doubt the Amira will be a great camera with build and performance that warrants the cost for many. However, C500 is no slouch, and a downright bargain in it's cost/performance ratio when combined with a 7Q. But either choice requires a compromise somewhere, whether you get Amira or C500.

As for the Cfast cost - what you're quoting is the original Cfast card price. Cfast 2.0 is a new version of the format, and as yet still unpriced and unavailable.

mmm I don't imagine the Arri will be fitting on a defy g10 or Movi…. or something a like, but the c500 certainly will…. Man if I would have known about the $14,999 deal… i yi yi I could have bought one!

Oh geez. If anyone starts planning a shoot around a Movi, I am going to walk away.

This might be more EU specific, but I think the AMIRA has just killed the C500 (and the F55), price-features ratio.

Given EU prices, if you take a C500 and add the required prof EVF, an Odyssey7Q, Batt distribution and some sort of rig to make it all shoulder-mountable, you're already at the SAME price point of the top of the line AMIRA (€32k).
But you still don't have a light (4kg), simple, compact, TANK-rugged, ergonomic and one-operator friendly and seamless camera, neither do you get the rest of AMIRA features: 200fps, 2K@12bit444, 14.5 stops, great colorimetry, 3D-luts, Mount-any-lens, etc.

Looks like Canon doesn't want to sell C500s over here, at €22k a pop for the bare bones body. And it's too late I'm afraid. All pros in the segment at this side of the pond are now set on the new ARRI.

Yeah, it's really interesting how companies are structuring their prices so differently in EU & the States. I paid the equivalent of 11.8K euro for my C500, which is a good deal less than what it's going for over there (even now, it's under 15K euro equivalent here). That being said, the C500 certainly doesn't require an EVF (Deity Mira does that job just fine), and batteries are a given for any camera. As for a rig, those moving up from a C300, a C500 does make a lot of sense b/c the pieces all work the same with either camera, and my shoulder rig (Ergocine Lion) & battery solution (w/ multiple V-lock batts) cost about 2k euro equivalent in total. But yes, add to all that the cost of the O7Q and Canon Raw upgrade.

I do get what you're saying about certain features of the Amira not being available on the C500, but the road goes both ways. The C500 does offer things that the Amira won't/can't give you. And you do get 2K@12bit444 with the C500, as well as QHD or 4K@10bit422, which the Amira won't do. It won't give you raw video, either. The DR isn't as good, but colorimetry is quite strong with C500 as well. I'm sure I'm the minority opinion, but I actually prefer Canon's colorimetry - not to mention the C500 offers expanded color gamut options like it's proprietary Cinema Gamut and DCI-P3+ color gamut. And it's low-light performance is unparalleled, even by Alexa. Finally, stripped down out of a shoulder rig and with a Canon brick, the C500 is lighter and more compact than the Amira. Add an O7Q and the weight is the same.

Much of the same can be said of the F55, which holds other features over the head and out of reach of the Amira.

All cameras have their strengths and weaknesses when comparing features, cost being one of them. Seems like how much price makes a difference to you depends a lot on where you live, but I'm very happy I purchased a C500 when the getting was good rather than waiting for an Amira. The Arri Amira will make some beautiful images, no doubt. So will the C500. Nobody is being held back by their camera if these are the choices.

guys where do u get the Arri info from? on their website there is just an announcement about the future camera ..... but i see some of you posted prices, where does it come from?

Must have been a lot, because I bought at the last minute and wanted two bodies, but my supplier- one of the biggest could only get me one. I think it is just a big bait and switch, they give you the first one cheap and then the second and third and so on the price escalates so that when Peter Jackson decides to redo "The Hobbit" the right way in 24p 4k it will cost him more than he earned on LOR lol, just to buy the cameras.
