C500 MKII Leaked on Canon Rumors

Canon does some strange engineering for video over the years. The 1DC had an S35 mode that was moderately decent oversampled 1080p. They dropped it in the 1DXII and 5Div. Instead, they just keep offering their horrible pixel binned "FullHD" in every camera. They did add a 1080p crop offering on the EOS R which is a 1080p conversion of the UHD pixel crop that seems to use the same process as the C100, but it isn't quite as large as S35. As far as I can tell, video offerings outside of the 1DC have always had video as an after though addition using a minimal amount of resources.

Ah, that's so strange. The 1DC is the last Canon DSLR I've owned (and still own 'cuz it's fantastic), and I assumed they kept the same recording modes on the 1DX-II at least. Wow so the 1DX-II lacks both a proper S35 mode and CLog? Not a clearly superior camera at all is it?* So strange that they don't have an option that blows the 1DC away in every respect 7 years after it came out.

*(I know it does high-speed)

May be splitting hairs a little, but wasn't the 1DC aps-h, not FF?

The sensor was FF35. I believe it was the first 1D to have an FF35 sensor.

There was a 1080 in FF35 mode (ala 5d style). The 4K mode was APS-H crop. And there was of course, the very lovely s35 crop for sharp 1080.

This thread is so DVXUser, rumor of a hot new, relatively high end camera and by page two, the conversation has completely veered off topic to long discontinued old DSLRs.
Does this indicate that people in general are ho hum about this possible new camera or is it just DVXers being ultra short attention span DVXers? How many here are ADHD? ;-)

Canon has always protected everything until the very last moment when it was time to change...even a little bit.

The 1DC is part of the EOS line. The 1DX Mark II is part of the photo division.

And if you think like a Japanese engineer, there is no reason for them to be alike.

It’s only in the last 2-3 years in which we are finally seeing major changes and it’s because the saturation is borderline unbearable.

Squirrel!!!

Squirrel!!!

Ha, ha! Maybe it's a money thing?!? A lot of people are now conditioned by the PCC 6K and S1H that 2019 6K cameras cost under $4k. Not sure what this camera will cost if it's really true, but you know it won't be under $4k.

I don't think it's a lack of interest in the camera. I'm guessing it's about price. Most people on here are not in the $15K+ camera price buying bracket, I would assume (with some exceptions, of course).

I would love to own a couple of C500 II cameras when they come out, but I'm pretty sure they'll be prohibitively expensive for my budget. Plus, it looks like it uses CF Express cards (not CFast) and I have no idea how much those will cost. I'm still eyeing a C200 now that the price of the camera has dropped (as well as CFast card prices), but would like it even more if it were $5500 for the camera. Until then, I'm okay with my two C100s and 1DX II.

Speaking of the 1DX II, its 4K footage is absolutely lovely. Not as much dynamic range as a C200 / C300, but plenty good for most needs. My only real complaint is the artificial 30-minute recording limitation before having to start another clip. Aside from that, It's great, especially with a couple of Egodisk 512GB CFast cards for long event recording.

There I go again, switching to DSLR talk. This is DVX User indeed!

My first answer to your above question was Millennials. Then I thought Donald Trump would be more appropriate.

I too have a 1DXII and it is fantastic. I do miss the CLOG and built-in ND of my C300. However, this works well for my needs. Most of my personal stuff is shot in the 1DXII. However, a client of mine prefers the original C300 over the 4K of 1DXII. So when the C500/C300 III gets launched, I need to take a call as I need a full fledged camera with all bells and whistles for certain type of work.

My only worry is that 8K is so near. How long will the 6K cameras be mainstream? You can't argue with clients who want the latest camera.

It probably has more to do with shooting styles than cameras, but the best looking video on this Sumire promo is shot on a Red.

The C500 would be more of the C700 look, which for some reason hasn’t seemed to ignite much interest on dvx

There may be some truth to that. If the rumored camera was really hot, this thread would be out at 10-20 pages already and it's definitely not.
It would be really, really hot, if the camera was priced under $10,000 because everything that's been announced or released over the last month or so has been way under $10,000.

At $20,000, it might share the same fate as C700 rather than C100/200/300.

Also, it is ho hum.

It feels like this is accurately named - Canon C500 MKII. Like the C500 before it (which I owned) it will do some things that are impressive, but is lacking enough to be widely adopted which means if you’re producing your own stuff and you want to use it for yourself it will be nice for most things, but as an owner operator the odds of getting it on set for other multi cam productions are low because no one else will have it. (Maybe if you shot AVCHD in 4K you could get it onto a C300MKII show???)

They would have had to completely canabalize the C700 to include prores, but I would so much rather have prores than raw/raw lite. Raw sounds great on paper, but if you look up the definition of raw I’m pretty sure it just reads: Bigger files and more complicated workflow so you can make the exact same decisions later instead of now.

There is no conversation because it's still a rumor.

Plus...camera sales aren't the only thing that is declining in the business; there's also an increasing lack of interest and most people become very tired of this never-ending circus.

This should be a sticky. (Are we still doing stickies?)

Come to our restaurant, where you pick up the raw ingredients and take them home to figure out what you want to eat later!

RAW is only a problem if you don't have the knowledge or equipment for it.

Because it's pretty natural in Resolve or FCPX (REDCODE) and can be just like editing ProRes.

Per usual having more $$$ will help you.
