Anyone try the new Cinema Gamut on the updated C500 firmware? If so, what are you thoughts? Also if one were only planning for web and HDTV distribution, would there be benefits to this color space?

Thanks.

As of right now, if your delivery is HDTV or web, there isn't much benefit to using the Cinema Gamut, or the DCI-P3+ gamut. DCI-P3 is primarily useful for digital cinema projections where you know you'll be exhibiting with a projector that can reproduce those colors, or perhaps a film print exhibition (does that still happen?). Going even further than DCI-P3 (or Canon's DCI-P3+), the Canon Cinema Gamut is designed to fully encompass the color gamut of all contemporary motion picture film stocks, and also the extremely wide color gamut of UHDTV's Rec BT.2020. However, that increased range cannot be displayed on our Rec BT.709 devices, or in the current generation of computer monitor displays. Currently, there are very few high-end displays that can even reproduce the DCI-P3's gamut - like the $40,000 Dolby PRM-4200.

If and when the Rec BT.2020 comes online for 4k/8k UHDTV broadcasts, you'll be pleased to know that the Canon Cinema Gamut fully encompasses that color gamut (and DCI-P3 does not). There also may be some benefit to recording with a broader gamut for finishing in Rec BT.709 since you'll essentially be super-sampling color information - but unless you can grade with an accurate high color gamut display, you're best bet may be to stick with Rec BT.709 - or at least master in that color space.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with having a wider gamut version waiting in the wings, since that will enhance the value of your archival projects for future mastering & releasing in UHDTV Rec BT.2020.
