C300: C300mk2 real world footage and user reviews.

You mean match as in 12-bit 444? Because otherwise the FS7 is much more feature rich. No amount of add on hardware will get you 4k60 in the C300ii, if that's important to you.

If you shoot with a LUT both cameras are pretty much plug & play. Cine EI has excellent color. Not sure what you mean about faces nailed...

They are both great cameras no doubt. If you shoot a lot of C300 shows the choice is obvious, otherwise FS7 will surely fit the bill.

For some of us, the focus assist is the feature that would more than make up for the additional cost.

Sorry, I did not know. Can you point me to a thread that confirms that RAW 60p is not an option for the C300 Mk2 ?

I just took delivery of my Canon C300mk2 and I can indeed confirm that 4KRAW goes up to 30frames per second, NOT 60fps. I also own an Odyssey7Q with RAW license so I got to test this out all the way.

BTW. It wasn't just Mitch that was confused. Even Canon's own reps were confused at NAB.

I think everyone was surprised given its spot in the market the competition (F5,FS7) has had 4k60p for a year now. For many users it won't matter for some it will. We are spoilt for choice these days.

That is just crazy. Do you think there is any chance Canon could implement 4K 60p with new firmware ? ( or is this Canon trying to protect the C500 ? )

The Canon White Paper 'Image Performance Enhancements in the EOS C300 mark II" on Canon USA's web site details how image processing is differing between the different modes. "2K HD RGB 444" at up to 30fps, "YUV 4:2:2" at up to 60fps, "120 FPS Operation of 2K/HD" (crop) and "4K UHD Capability of the C300 Mark II" at up to 30fps. Based on this it seems that the C300mk2 does not have the processing power to run 4K up to 60fps, even if it's just RAW. Otherwise Canon would have been able to run full frame 2K/HD RGB 444 up to 60fps. So getting 4K60fps RAW does not look to me like something a firmware upgrade could fix.

As on why Canon did this? I don't know. My guess is a compromise between processing power/heat/electric power need in a physically limited space as well as time to market. "Protecting" the C500 this way is of course completely pointless. The C500 didn't sell in numbers so what the C500 owners need are economics of scale to sustain development of nifty external recorders that support all frame rates in codecs that best serve the market segment of that camera, i.e. ProRes. Had the C300mk2 supported 4K60fps RAW, I am quite certain that the Odyssey7Q/7Q+ would support all C500 frame rates in ProRes by now.

Thank you. Looks pretty filmic. Resolved foliage well in wide shot. Even when flesh clipped, not to videoish. Was this all 1080 60 over 24? Or was here some 120fps?

Great find, looks great......and as for this "crop" discussion, with a 4K chip, why is "zooming in on the chip" any different from what has been RED's mantra over the last 4 years?..."shoot in 4K so you can move in and adjust the frame".....this footage looks very good and I don't see any issues......just sayin'

you're talking 8 years old technology here :)

Thanks guys... I used a 50mm 1.2 L Series lens. All shots were 60p played back at 24p - 10 bit color. No use of the 120fps in this shot, but I did some testing and found the 120 cropped footage looked good to my eye. I'll try to post some later.

Nice review.

One interesting takeaway as per the 120fps being heavily discussed in this thread.

"100/120p is soft and cropped.

The 2x crop for frame rates above 50/60p is uncool. It basically means no wide angle. If you have a 11mm lens with the x1.6 crop for the smaller sensor you end up at 17.6 – multiplied by the additional crop factor of x2 you end up with a 35mm lens. That’s wasting a super wide angle lens for nothing. Also the image is soft. It feels like the 5D Mark III. To me thats a good way of describing it. It’s perfectly fine until you compare it to a real 2K or FullHD Image. I personally would think twice before using that mode. 50 or 60p are sharp and nice. But “only ” FullHD or 2K. But the image is superb. In fact. I could not see any difference in image quality between a downscaled 4K image and the 2K image on a FullHD Screen."

To sum up, would appear to match up with other reviews, it's exactly what one would expect as a successor to the C300:

Awesome HD, ungenerous 4K, crap slo-mo, awesome auto-focus, great colour (though FS7 not far off), in a compact single shooter ready to go workhorse.

Everything is fine until we get down to the pricing, which is the sticking point, just like for a lot of other reviewers:

"If I'm going to pay that much for that camera why not just look at a RED or going to an Alexa MINI?"

"The footage looks great, but is it going to be worth the additional price of rental vs. a FS7 which is half the price?"

Disagree....Because the C300 MK II, aside from some accessories, you are basically done at $16K where the REDs are much more when you get all that is needed to make it work...and The Alexa Mini is over $30K..
