C300: C300II Proxy Recording without Cfast Cards

I can't recall whether this was available before the latest firmware update, but I just tested and the C300II can indeed record to proxy MXF files on the SD card without a Cfast card in either slot. That means you can get up to 2k 60p 8-bit 4:2:0 35Mbps - slightly better than C100 quality - without having to invest in Cfast cards. Good to know if anyone is interested in this camera for long docu shoots without buying into Cfast media.

Cheers,
Slavik

I don't think 24p is 35Mbps. Closer to 18Mbps; its file sizes are smaller than the 24Mbps on the C100s. Still looks pretty good most of the time, though. More likely to have banding than C100 footage, I find. Haven't looked at 60p file sizes.

If I'm shooting a wedding at 10 bit 4:2:2 at 50Mbps, along with the proxy file, I'll still give the wedding video company (whose standards are low) I'm shooting for the 10 bit 4:2:2 at 50Mbps file, because it looks better.

At $379 for one 128GB Cfast card, which at 10 bit 4:2:2 at 50Mbps, gives 6 hours of footage, which will get through most shoot days, and after spending $12-16K on the camera, saving $379 doesn't seem to make much difference, and then you have access to a better codec.

It's when you want to shoot multi-cam docs and events in 4K, like myself, and end up spending $5200 on 8 256 GB memory cards, then the price of memory becomes painful.
