C300: C300 MKII Image Magnification Doesn't Work While Recording

Not working on mine either. Noticed it a few days go. I agree...I hope this is addressed. It's a nifty feature.

As a doc shooter, this feature is extremely important and this news is a huge bummer as I just ordered a c300 II yesterday.

I understand that you want/need this, and hopefully it's just a firmware thing…

…but isn't the new focus assist with the indicator much superior? It shows you if your front or back focused, and should make it easy to pull focus manually?

I used to use the punch in to check focus a lot, but not so much after getting the auto-focus on the C100. Now I mainly use it for sit down interviews where I have time and want to be extra precise on my focus. Without it during record, it may mean if the talent moves I'll have to stop recording to check my focus, which when doing multi-cam interviews can make syncing more a pain, and in terms of organization it's nice to have one long clip for an interview, along with not risking forgetting to start recording again. I could see using face detection auto-focus for interviews possibly, though some of the lenses I use for interviews are manual lenses with no auto-focus.

For me in a majority of situations the image magnification during recording in the original C300 is not of much use. It magnifies only the centre portion. So for off centre subjects I just can't be sure that the subject is in critical focus. for interviews etc one can magnify and see but for documentaries especially for wildlife etc the present implementation is useless.

In the C300 II the AF coverage is 80% so I won't be too bothered if the image magnification is present or not during recording.

The C300 is able to move the magnify box around after a firmware update.

God. I guess you are right. I just checked and it shows a small + sign when I press the magnify button. Can't figure out how to move around that from the centre. Joystick doesn't help. Can someone tell me. That would be great help in my documentary shoot starting next week.

Are you in AF mode or MF mode? box won't move when in AF mode.

Great. I was in AF mode as I use the DPAF a lot and use the 7 button to lock focus on AF. Never realised that image magnification doesn't work in AF mode. Just checked my camera and it works in MF mode. Thanks a ton.

Moving the focus mag box is essential. I was surprised that it wasn't included when the C300 launched. I was completely baffled that Sony didn't implement it when the FS7 launchced and is supposed to be included in the next FW update. What are these manufacturers thinking. Especially when shooting in 4K at wider Fstop sharp focus is key and unless you centre frame everyone its useless if you can't move it.
