C300: C300 MkI to record on one vs two?

I found it interesting that the C300 Mki can record on two cards at one time. I was wondering how many records on both cards at the same time vs recording on just one card at a time?

Usually you might do that if you're extra paranoid in wanting a back up. Or you might do it two different resolutions / bitrates (especially common if you're shooting 4K resolution or higher), with one for proxy editing or quick uploading etc

Personally I just use my 2nd card slot on my Sony PMW-F3 as an overflow slot.

But I always dual record to both cards with my audio recorder, as audio files are so small (compared to video files) that I might as well always make a back up as a cheap form of insurance.

I always dual record as I have had cards corrupted before in the middle of a shoot.

Depends on the interview. When it's been very high-profile individuals and there's not going to be a re-do if something happened, I'll double roll. I wish I could on all of my cameras, but I'm really glad I can on the 300, because I've seen more issues over the years with cameras that use 'off-the-shelf' media than cameras that use proprietary media.

Record to both slots and backup both cards to external hard drives. If you don't have enough cards for longer shoots, buy more cards.

As I've learned, the first time that you have to explain to a client that you are going to have to repeat that day of interviews or repeat the staging and lighting of that scene is also the last time you ever want to record to a camera or audio recorder that only records to one slot. It just makes me anxious now to shoot on a single card or hard drive. The only thing that feels worse is when you forgot to hit record, but that is usually caught and fixed relatively quickly.

I have two Lacie 1TB external drive. Thanks

Might want to get more drives and perhaps more cards. And if you can dedicate someone to backup duties, that'd be a good thing; on a small crew, that wouldn't necessarily be that person's only job. But if you're directing, get someone else to do it so you can focus on the story/actors/next setup/etc.

Three simple-to-use apps that let you backup each file to multiple drives (and then confirm that backup) without a lot of hassle:
