C300 MK III and Black Magic Video Assist 7" 12G

I have found that the C300 Mk III's HDMI output is not compatible with the BM Video Assist, white its SDI output works fine. This conclusion had been arrived at following extensive testing.

It's definitely compatible...it's not working for you? What's happening?

[Of course make sure you switch to HDMI on the VA, and/or that your HDMI in/out simply works.]

Also check your camera and make sure HDMI output is on if you're using another output on the camera (IDR exactly how it works, but something comes to mind).

The C300 MK III's HDMI output is working and has been checked with other monitors, and the Video Assist's HDMI input is working with other cameras. All settings, both on the MK III and the Video Assist have been checked and are correctly assigned, and brand new, High Speed HDMI cables have been tried, but the only way I can get the MK III to communicate with the Video Assist is over SDI, and this regardless of whether shooting RAW or XF-AVC.
I have an Atmos Ninja V+ scheduled to arrive sometime today, which according to Canon Cine support works with the C300 MK III over HDMI, although Atmos does offer an SDI module for that monitor/recorder.

BTW, I prefer to use an SDI connection whenever possible, but the HDMI issue mentioned is perplexing.

This is a followup to my earlier post:

The Atmos Ninja V+ arrived several hours ago, and after charging a battery I immediately connected it to my C300 Mk III via HDMI and it successfully transmitted signal to the Ninja without issue, unlike my experience with the Black Magic Video Assist.

The Video Assist 7" is a nice monitor/recorder, but with two batteries on board it is a heavy beast, while the Ninja V+ is almost half its weight, and as a 5" monitor it takes up less real-estate. Furthermore, for critical focusing I prefer to use an EVF, and my MK III has an EVF-V70 mounted to it. For that reason, either of the two monitor/recorders are being used and will be used for framing, visualizing camera settings and such. I will be keeping the BM Video Assist for studio use, where the camera will be mounted to a tripod, and the video assist will be connected via SDI. As for the Ninja, I will most likely obtain the Atmos SDI accessory for a more secure physical connection, assuming it plays nicely with the MK III. And as for codecs, the Ninja offers greater flexibility, albeit, sans BM RAW, which is moot, since the MK III cannot accommodate BM RAW. Next up is a test of both with my R5c.

Ron

I have a similar issue with the 7" Shinobi.
- works on the R5 and R5c but not on the C300iii via HDMI

My other monitors NinjaV+ and cheapo 4K Feelworld have no issue with the C300iii

I tried other cables but if it works with the NinjaV+ it should work with the 7" Shinobi (unplug Ninja and plugin Shinobi vice versa)

Sorry to hear about your dilemma, but the HDMI issue is definitely perplexing. Both Canon and Black Magic support technicians have drawn a blank with the issue described, and have suggested that I do what I had already done—to no avail—to effect a remedy.
As I'd indicated in my prior post, I prefer to use SDI since it offers a physically more secure connection with its BNC connectors, but there are times when HDMI is needed. To that end, I've just received the SDI module for the Ninja V+ and will try it out later on today. It looks like it will add considerable bulk, and some weight to the Ninja, but I have the Ninja mounted to the MK III's handle located cold shoe, fairly close to the camera's center of gravity, so balance should not be an issue.

It has become more weird.. I did another test. I played with all settings in the camera settings menu page 2 and after that it worked. But SDI works only on the monitor output, not on the SDI port.

Hi Clermond,
Wow, that is weird. I have not tried the monitor port, but the SDI output works fine with the Video Assist, however, I have yet to try it with the Ninja V+. There is a setting that allows one to select output either from the monitor port or SDI, could you have accidentally chosen the monitor port?

I had changed everything that could have been changed/adjusted on the C300 MK III when trying to get HDMI to work for the video assist, all to no avail. But rather than waste any further time dealing with support I have decided to use SDI with the video assist, and either HDMI or SDI with the Ninja.

Ron

I mentioned above in my first post to make sure the camera settings are correct (specifically because Canon is weird about these things in their cinema cameras ever since the first versions).

But, in general, camera signals/outputs to various hardware have been a nightmare ever since they were invented.

About 10 years ago (once monitors started to become really inexpensive for the consumer), you'd find you couldn't get many simple monitors to work with 1080/60p because they maxed out at 30p -- or they wouldn't see 24p but would 23.98p -- or some didn't accept pull-downs -- or certain interlaced formats, etc. etc.

And some hardware may have only output a certain signal out of a certain port (which you had to turn on to output something).

Or a certain piece of hardware couldn't down-convert or up-convert for whatever reason.

It was a mess.

Apparently, problems persist in the monitor/recorder realm, as I have not been able to get the video assist to acquire signal from the C300 Mk III over HDMI. But I have given up trying and have accepted the fact that it has to be used via SDI. The Ninja v+ that I received yesterday, on the other hand, seems to play nice with the MK III, both via HDMI and SDI (with the SDI accessory module). The Ninja is a lot more complex than the video assist, and offers many more options, which means that I will have to actually read the manual.

Ron
