C300: C300 MK II Anton Bauer Questions

I'm looking into a C300 MK II kit, with a SmallHD 502 as external monitor/EVF. Instead of having to deal with the new (and expensive) C300 MK II batteries, and constantly swapping/charging LP-E6s for the 502, I am hoping to power the whole rig with Anton Bauers.

Wooden Camera makes an appropriate gold mount, with Canon Lemo out and DTap out to power the 502:

My question is, what AB battery should I invest in? There are so many to choose from and I'm not sure which has the most fitting capacity. Digital 90? Dionic HC? 90? HCX?

Thanks

Thanks. I'm just slightly confused about the power requirements for the camera/monitor/battery. The DC input on the C300 MK II is 16.7 VDC, but the output on the Bauer is 14.4 V. The AB will still be able to fully power both the camera and the monitor?

Thanks for the responses. I am still just unclear, how can an AB that has an output of 14.4V power a camera that requires 16.7V and an external monitor on top of that? Number wise, that just doesn't make sense to me. But I clearly don't understand batteries.

The C300 does not concretely need 16.7vdc. 14.4vdc is a "nominal" rating. It's a target for the battery co.s to build to. Someone here could chime in with the low-threshold V but I would guess it's close to 10 or 11vdc before power-down. C100MKII calls for 8.4vdc at the cam input so in my case, I need a regulator circuit. I think that 502 may also be 7.4vdc powered unit so your choice is either power it with a Canon battery or drop the V down with a variable/regulated plate.

Since Anton Bauer fails to conveniently provide pre-sales specifications for their batteries, you may use this IDX spec sheet to see for yourself that a typical battery can output a range vdc-

I am definitely getting the SmallHD Dtap dummy LP-E6 chord, but are you saying that the HC Dionic has no problem powering the 502 AND a C300 MK II? Thanks

Unless that DTap contains some drop circuitry, yeah. 500 series is 6~8vdc or something? I use the RRM power distro block you mention above.

So with a PowerPack or something of the like, one AB can power the 502 (without frying it because of supplying too many V) and can satisfy the power demands of the C300 MK II? Maybe I'm thinking about this the wrong way, but in my mind:

C300 MK II demand ~ 14.4v - 16.7v
SmallHD 502 demand ~ 6v - 8v

AB output ~ 14.4v

Wouldn't this mean that the AB would be overdrawn?

OP- The RRM product you mentioned earlier is not correct for C300II users.

Also, you must use a coupler with regulated 7.2, 2A capacity circuit. You can use Small or 3rd party devices rated accordingly. Overdrawn? Not sure what you had in mind there. The cam will function fine on a 3rd party external battery rated 14.4vdc. The monitor will also function fine on same battery (along with some sort of multi-tap plate) working with V-reduction circuitry. Pump 14vdc straight into that 502 and don't expect a warranty. I-draw from both devices simultaneously dictate hours of operation from a single charge. 90 probably won't get you through a full day of shooting- it doesn't for me...

Wouldn't this mean that the AB would be overdrawn?

You have to calculate amperage draw, not voltage of powered devices. The Dionic HC's are "high current" or some other acronym- designed for power hungry devices. So, calculate your amperage needs (at 14.4v) and check that the batteries can sustain that power draw.

The math is: watts/voltage=amps

For example, a power hungry camera like the original Red 1MX or Alexa need HC style batteries. A regular Dionic 90 may shut off because the amperage draw is too high. (by design- circuit protection) The C300Mkii should NOT need HC batteries- but you may want to buy them for future use. Batteries are rated for power draw (often in watts)- check with manufacturers.

The D-tap to E6 cable should be regulated, to lower the voltage to safely power the 502. SmallHD should sell that regulated power cable. Double check with them via phone.

How much you travel also determines battery purchase. I believe you cannot pack ANY LITHIUM batteries in your luggage- everything has to be carry-on. TSA regulations change- do your research. They are getting tougher on inspections so don't think you can get away side skirting regulations.

^Lets slow down a bit here. First-off, batteries are not classed by power draw or W. They are rated as Wh (Ah*V) or energy. Energy and power are not equivalent. Second, no need to "calculate" I-draw. Batteries of this nature can easily push 10A and no way will a C300II and 502 pull close to this. C300II is a 14vdc cam unlike a c300 which is 7vdc. When the V goes up, the I goes down. Just check the power brick I ratings for both. Curious types can always go to web for published I specs for each piece of equipment.

This solves the issue for the Smallhd 502, Here are the specs from SmallHD - Input: 9v - 38v DC, Output: 7.4v 2.5A DC (regulated)

I power both a Canon C300/100 and the SmallHD monitor ALL DAY on one battery if it is new and fully charged.
All you need is a plate to mount the AB plate to your 15mm rails.
This from day to day experience and talking with smallhd before hand. nuff said.

The AB Dionic 90 has been replaced with the AB HC Dionic and will be more than adequate for the Canon C300II. You will need a charger and for both portability and multi-functionality I would suggest the Tandum 70 - on camera charger which can also be used as an AC power supply for the Canon C300 II. Less to carry around.
Best,

I use Dionic HCs and Switronix HyperCores 98Whr to power C300mk2, Odyssey7Q & accessories (including camera light). Works fine. 2 of each (4 total) has so far powered me through the day with no re-charge, although I seem to be a bit closer to using it all up with the C300mk2 than with C500, so might need to add some more.

BTW. This low power need is one of the main reasons I bought a C300mk2 and not an Alexa Mini or Amira. I can make my day on 4 bricks, while the Amira user will probably need 16-20 Dionic HCs to finish their day (estimate, as I've lost count on how many times we cycled the batteries every time I've shot with the Amira)
