C300: C300 Mic Holder

So I've the Zacuto helmet and handle setup. With that, the C300 Mark II's mic holder can be positioned on the Zacuto helmet, free from the LCD unit, which is good, as I tend to move the LCD unit to different places depending on what or how I'm shooting.

But sometimes I want the mic mount off. So then I have to unscrew those tiny screws, which seem to be getting more and more difficult to screw in and out; I think they may be stripping.

As it is, what I'm looking for is a low profile mic holder that I can quickly remove from the camera without screwing around on set. Ideally with a setup that can mounted on the helmet.

I'm thinking perhaps a cold shoe mount screwed into the Zacuto helmet, and then a cold shoe mic mount. The new Rode SM3-R Camera Shoe Shockmount may fit the bill, but seems a bit bulky for what I'm looking for. I like the size and shape of the current C300 Mark II mic holder, but I can't think of a way to make it a quick release setup from the camera.

On the C300 using the Movcam top handle I found a spud that mated with a shockmount for a fishpole. Off hand I'd say it was 3/8" male to male. This screwed in to an open thread on the top handle. I then found a metal collar with a set screw at the same hardware store that locked the spud into the top handle. I then went to Trew Audio and looked at a few standard shockmounts and picked the one I liked. Worked like a champ.

But sometimes I want the mic mount off.

Eric, do you want the whole mount off, or mainly the mic and suspension (with perhaps a few parts remaining behind)?

If the later, perhaps your could configure a boom-pole quick release to work with your helmet or handle? Would leave a little stud (at least) on your camera, but might work if you're mainly looking to quickly reduce the overall size of your rig?

I like the Ambient QuickLok system:

And I've heard good things about the Sound Guys Boom Pole Quick Release:

Maybe there's a way to repurpose the Sony mic holders, which have a simple open/close mechanism rather than Canon's screw. Here's a pic of the FS5 from Erik Naso's blog -

To follow up, my solution was the Sennheiser MZS 600 Shock Mount for MKE600 (which fits my Audio Technica mics) with a DM-Accessories BOT-FLAT Handle or Underside Camera Shoe Mount (Black).

This solution seems to work well.

You can see the setup in this video below.
