C300 maximum 5min clip duration?

Hi there,

I dont know if this has been talked about in other posts, apologies if it has.

Ive just worked with the C300 for the first time, a multi-cam shoot shooting long interviews.

According to my post guys all the long interviews (30min) came back as 5:15min clips/files. I'll talk to them tomorrow and get more info as to how they transcoded, but its not easy on the sound synching if this is all they have to go by.

Does anyone know if this is a camera setting, or a post issue? Is there any way around this?

thanks for you help

kind regards

The camera certainly does not do that on its own and I don´t think there is a setting for that.
What cards did you use, did you format them in the camera?

And how did the footage get to the post-house?

At 5:15, the camera has written 50Mbps video to 2GB. This is the point that the Canon XF codec seamlessly splits the MXF files in order to allow continuous recording. Otherwise, the footage would be limited by the infamous Fat32 4GB file size limit that cuts off DSLR's at around the 12 minute mark. If your post guys are reading the MXF files directly, then they will see each MXF file as a separate clip, regardless of when you cut the picture.

Transcoding or rewrapping the footage will put the long takes together into one file. Of course, if you put the original MXF files next to each other on a timeline, they will also play seamlessly with no break.
