C300: C300 Mark II - Third party lens compatibility?

Hey all

I received my C300 MKII this past week, it's been great fun getting acquainted with it, a pretty exciting upgrade from my C100.

Other than my standard Canon glass, I have the new Tamron 35mm f1.8 as well as the Sigma 20mm f1.4, Sigma 50-100mm and Tokina 11-20mm. I'm out of town for Christmas and only have the Tamron with me as far as third party glass goes so I haven't been able to test the others. The Tamron doesn't talk to the C300 though, I can't change aperture, etc.

Am I basically **** out of luck trying to use certain third party lenses, or are these issues generally known and being dealt with?

On a sort-of unrelated note, has anyone upgraded their C300 MKII to the latest firmware? 1.0.6 whatever? The change log mentioned improved auto focus capabilities. Curious if anyone has noticed a difference.

Cheers,

Sean

Some lenses need firmware upgrade to work with C300mk2 (and some of the newest Canon DSLR too). Initially the Sigma 20/1.4 did not work at all with C300mk2, but Sigma has now upgraded their 20/1.4 to work. You might have to get a USB dock and upgrade your copy unless it came with the latest firmware.

I don't know about the Tamron lenses and if an upgrade is available or will be available later on.

The Canon EOS EF mount is an electronic mount, so is subject to changes with new models. Some of Canon's own lenses don't always work with the latest cameras as the electronic part of the mount evolves. And 3rd party lens manufacturers aren't always offering upgrades.

Almost bought a Tamron 45mm, but I haven't heard anything good about Tamron lenses when it comes to DPAF performance and I've seen some demos where it looks janky and hunts a bit. Sigma seems to have it much more figured out.

I recently purchased the Sigma 18-35 1.4 for my c300 MK2. Do I need to upgrade the firmware on that lens?

I have the Sigma 18-35 and it works great on my C300 Mkii, but i have no idea what is the firmware version on the lens !

In general, i've found Sigma lenses to work well with the C300 mk2 - however, they are quite a bit noisier than canon lenses, to the point where I've found them impossible to use with auto focus in synch sound situations. Canon USM lenses are borderline but often ok, STMs are certainly different sound wise, a bit more quiet, but different in character ("wheezing" rather than the "ticking" sound of USMs and the "ticking" may actually be easier to edit out in critical situations...)
