C300: C300 Mark II Proxy files

Has anyone noticed the quality of the proxy files aren't great? I know their not supposed to be, but I thought they would be of similar quality compared to the C100/Mark II? What's different, they are both 8 bit, 4:2:0 @ roughly 25Mbps.

How does proxy to SD card compare to 8-bit, 4:2:0 L-GOP when recorded to C-Fast card? Like you, I would assume them to be identical.

The proxies are being recorded to the SD card. But the specs are equal those of the C100 on paper. I'm not sure what Canon have done to these proxies for such a drop in image quality?

The proxies are being recorded to the SD card. You can't record them to The Cfast cards. The lowest you can record to the Cfast is 10 bit Long GOP, the same as the first C300, I believe. According to this chart you should be able to record 8-bit L-GOP 35Mbps/24Mbps to CFast.

Kantian1,

You are correct -- I thought that 8-bit was an option for C-Fast. The marketing materials imply that it is, but according to the user manual it is not. See page 63 of manual.

Could the problem you are experiencing be related to a different LUT or lack of one being applied to the proxy version? Page 111 mentions that a LUT can be applied or not applied to the proxy version independently of the version being recorded to CFast.

I recorded the clip below in Canon Log. I was going through the ISO range and this was captured at about 400 ISO. You could be right, maybe the 8 bit 4:2:0 25Mbps compression can't hold up to the LOG info the C300 is pumping out? It is better when no LOG is applied. Thankfully, these problems only occur when you severely underexpose!
