C300: C300 exact frame rates

Hi guys, I'm shooting a music video and the director wants to overcrank, probably shooting 48fps and speeding up the song 200%. But, I've been searching and trying to figure out whether the camera shoots a true 48fps or something close to it like 47.96 or 48.17. That sort of odd thing that would throw the audio off just a little bit.

I think we can probably get away with just doing playback at 200% if we had to, but I'd prefer to have it exactly correct. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Max

You can set the camera to shoot 23.98(what most of the real world does if it's final destination is TV) or TRUE 24. You should only use the true 24 rate if you're planning on a film-out. All of your other frame rates(over cranking and under ranking) are based on your base frame rate(23.98, etc).

Interesting q for an engineer from Canon. Can you shoot a short test & run it all the way through post before you start production?

Canon Hollywood is very helpful. You could call them.

Interesting q for an engineer from Canon. Pg 62 of the new manual shows 1/48 available when shutter speed increments are set to 1/4 stop values in the menu. No mention of it being 23.98 x 2. Can you shoot a short test & run it all the way through post before you start production?

Great idea! I don't know why I didn't do this first. I spoke with a guy named Christopher at Canon who told me that the undercrank/overcrank modes all shoot at precise numbers. i.e. 48fps would be a true 48, instead of doubling 23.98 to get 47.96.

This doesn't totally make sense to me, as I would have thought the same thing as Run&Gun. It seems like the clock frequency of the camera would dictate the frame rate capabilities.

If I get a chance to shoot a test, I will add an update.

Hmmm… You would assume that everything is predicated on the 'system frequency' that the camera is set to. I have a fairly good technical understanding, but I'm not an engineer. If that's the case, I'd like to know what's going on exactly, because if the base rate is 23.98 and not 24.00 and the cam is shooting truly even frame rates when over and under cranking, there has to be some type of conversion going on somewhere.

If you find out more, let us know. I'm curious, now.
