C300 CF Card Testing

Stephen Mick

Totally Usable
So…I thought I'd make myself useful and do some testing with various CF cards and the C300, shooting in various modes. Here are the cards I'm testing…

- Delkin Devices 32GB UDMA 7 (1000x)
- Delkin Devices 32GB UDMA 6 (700x)
- Hoodman RAW 8GB UDMA 6 (675x)
- SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB

I'll also have a few others coming soon, and I'll update the thread with new information as tests are complete.

My plan is to test a few different scenarios, including…
- Dual-Slot Recording
- Maximum Bit-Rate / Maximum Data Speed Recording
- S&Q Motion Overcrank Recording

Again, I'll update the thread as I've got some results to post.

Test 1 (Single-Slot / Slow-Motion 60-Frame Test)
For this test, I set the camera to 720p and to record 60f slow-motion. With a single card in the camera, predictably the newer, faster cards held up well, while the older 30MB/s card did not.

- Delkin Devices 32GB 700x (Card Full)
- Delkin Devices 32GB 1000x (Card Full)
- Hoodman RAW 8GB 675x (Card Full)
- SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (TBD)
- SanDisk Extreme III 32GB 30MB/s (Recording Stopped After 3 Minutes)

Test 2 (Dual Slot - 50Mbps - 1080/24p)
For this test, I set the camera into Dual-Slot recording mode, and into 50Mbps 1080/24p, as that's likely what most will use. Here are the results…

- Delkin Devices 32GB 700x (82m/Card Full)
- Delkin Devices 32GB 1000x (82m/Card Full)
- Hoodman RAW 8GB 675x (20m/Card Full)
- SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (TBD)
- SanDisk Extreme III 32GB 30MB/s (Recording Stopped After 5 Minutes)

Test 3 (Single-Slot - 50Mbps - 1080/30p)
For test three, I wanted to simply test a single card in the camera, recording to the highest data/bitrate setting available. And…

- Delkin Devices 32GB 700x (82m/Card Full)
- Delkin Devices 32GB 1000x (82m/Card Full)
- Hoodman RAW 8GB 675x (20m/Card Full)
- SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (TBD)
- SanDisk Extreme III 32GB 30MB/s (Recording Stopped After 22 Minutes)

Test 4 (Dual-Slot - 50Mbps - 1080/30p)
I figured I'd go ahead and test the cards using the dual-slot recording at 1080/30p, as that seems to be the ultimate stress test the camera can provide. And…

- Delkin Devices 32GB 700x (81m/Card Full)
- Delkin Devices 32GB 1000x (81m/Card Full)
- Hoodman RAW 8GB 675x (20m/Card Full)
- SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (TBD)
- SanDisk Extreme III 32GB 30MB/s (Recording Stopped After 5 Minutes)

I'll be getting a few additional cards today, so I'll test those and add the results as I have them.

Thread updated with results so far.

And it makes me glad I chose the Delkin Devices UDMA6 (700x) cards. They're less expensive than the 1000x cards, with a faster write speed (67MB/s versus 50MB/s). So I can't tell you whether or not they're Canon-certified, but they have been "certified" by me.
