C200: C200B HDMI Problems

So I have two C200B's with SmallHD 702 monitors and I am having big HDMI problems, it doesn't matter which HDMI cable I use no matter what I have to jiggle and hold the camera side of the HDMI cable to get a picture on the monitor. It's infuriating and I need to find a fix for it, I really want to avoid having to buy the canon monitor but this is crazy, has anyone else experienced this and if so have you found a solution?

I don't have a C200B but this sounds to me like you have either a bad HDMI port on your camera or the HDMI cable has a short. I've only tested HDMI on my C200 very briefly but this does not match my behavior at all.

Just to confirm you have two HDMI cables, one for each and both are not working without having to hold them in? Do you have another cable handy just to test with?

I did a shoot with our C200 (not a B though) last week at a studio that had a big consumer LCD monitor floating around and used the HDMI on our C200 all day, placed the camera in several different positions, even on a slider and the HDMI output worked flawlessly. I HATE HDMI but so far, no issues with our C200. Bad cables are most likely if it's affecting two cameras. Eliminate the variables, if you switch cables and still have problems, it's either the HDMI connection on the cameras or the input on the SmallHDs.

I've used 3 different monitors and countless different cables, I went to Samys Camera yesterday and we tried trouble shooting it with different right angle adapters and cables and both cameras have the same problem regardless of monitor or cable. The same monitor and cable work perfectly on another camera so basically my C200 ports are messed up and I'm looking at just getting SmallHD 702's for the SDI connection.

You could take it to Canon and have them check it out. It's still on warranty isn't it?

Canon Burbank

Not too far from Samys.

Or they can also check it here:

When I received my C200 last August it had a dirty sensor and I took it to the Experience Center in Costa Mesa. The CPS representative helped me right away, they took the camera and cleaned the sensor. I had to leave the Camera with them and they had it back to me within a week. The delay was because it was the first C200 that they serviced and were waiting to receive a copy of the repair manual. They should be up to speed now.

I'd love to do that but I'm up in Santa Barbara not LA and have shoots to do this week and weekend so no time to go down there. I have a few big shoots internationally in March so I am gonna try and go down there before then.

Have you tried switching to 60p? My C200B connected to an older SmallHD only works at 60p. At 24 and 30, nothing.

I just finished a week long shoot where my C200B was connected to my SmallHD 702 Bright monitor via HDMI and it worked flawlessly. I will add that you need to go through the Canon menus (assuming you get a signal to see the menus by using SDI cable instead) & make sure that the HDMI out is set to a max resolution of 1920x1080. Out of curiosity when I first got mine I switched it to send a 4k signal and my monitor immediately when black & I had to plug an SDI cable in, switch the input in my SmallHD menu settings to SDI, and then go through the Canon menus to reset the HDMI out to 1920x1080. Hope this helps.

Also, that being said, using SDI cables instead of HDMI cables are way safer on this camera since the SDI twist locks into place whereas the HDMI can be jostled or bumped out.

FWIW, the only issue I've had at all with monitoring has been trying to go SDI out of the camera to my 702 and then HDMI out of my 702 to a Paralinx Triton wireless transmitter when shooting in 60P (it worked for every other framerate). When I switched to HDMI it worked perfectly on all frame rates.

Doesn't sound like a settings mismatch/issue since the OP can get it to work if the cable is held tightly against the connection. This doesn't help the OP with their problem, but it's just one more check mark against HDMI on professional equipment. It's just too unreliable. Manufacturers need to implement this little test for their cameras: if you can't buy it at Best Buy, then it should not have HDMI on it.
