C200: C200 Raw Black Bars at top and bottom of frame

At this point, I'll be surprised if Canon even offers any more bug fixes or feature enhancements for the C200.

Surprise! New firmware released today. 1.0.5.1.00. Although it doesn't address this request.

Notes:

Firmware Version 1.0.5.1.00 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. A Continuous Recording function has been added allowing for nonstop recording.*1
2. Peripheral illumination / chromatic aberration correction has been added for the following lenses:
- EF Cinema Lens: CN-E20mm T1.5 L F
- EF Lens: EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM
3. For LUTs that can be applied to output footage, official support for the ITU-R BT.2100 standard and ITU-R BT.2408 report have been added for the following terminals:.
- SDI terminal
- HDMI OUT terminal
Changes have been made so that the [HDR: PQ] and [HDR: HLG] base luminance corresponds to Diffuse White (100%) being 203nits*2.
4. Support for the [Reset] function that resets the clip number when the reel number is set, has been added.
5. When using an assignable button, the White Balance setting will be maintained after the power has been turned off.
6. Fixes a phenomenon that occurs on cameras with firmware versions 1.0.3.1.00 to 1.0.4.1.00 in which resolution appears to be reduced in SD card recordings and in external outputs when shooting with specific menu settings*3.

*1 When using the continuous recording function, only MP4 format / 1920x1080 resolution is possible.
*2 The HLG output is the brightness in the case of displaying on a 1000nits monitor.
*3 Specific menu settings:
- When [Resolution/Color Sampling] is set to [3840x2160 YCC420 8 bit].
- When [Resolution/Color Sampling] is set to [1920x1080 YCC420 8 bit], and [Slow Motion Recording] is activated.
- When [Resolution/Color Sampling] is set to [1920x1080 YCC420 8 bit], and the digital tele-converter and EF-S lens correction are activated.

I take full responsibility for this Firmware update since last page I posted that I wouldn't be surprised if Canon never updated the firmware again. I know they released this just because I posted that. You're welcome! ;-)

Not an especially interesting update, doesn't address any of the requests that would be simple to implement from our C200 Firmware Request List for Canon. Oh well, maybe someday.

Can anyone see if you change from RAW to mp4/xfavc if the camera remembers your frame rate settings now? That’s the thing on the camera that I just know is going to bite me in the ass one day.

I may download it today if I can find the time between editing. If I do, I'll check that out. I doubt they fixed that, I think they would have mentioned that in the release notes.

True. I would rather see more compression ratios. Year ago everyone was saying that Canon is not able to do it because of RED has patents for it. But now Blackmagic has compression ratios too, so how BM have solved this? Maybe there is little chance for C200 (or future models).

Canon could easily implement compression ratios for RAW if they wanted too since Canon Raw Light already violates RED's compressed raw patent. The only reason RED hasn't countersued is because Canon holds a bunch of patents that RED is probably using on their cameras. But yes, any compressed raw codec that records internally in the camera is a violation of RED's patent which is why Arri has to use Codex recorders.

Although the classic ALEXAs still need Codex recorders, the ALEXA XTs now use an 'XR Module' which is a side panel a part of the camera that enables RAW recording onto 'XR Capture Drives'. These were co-developed by Codex too, but all of the new XTs bought today come with the hardware installed and you don't need anything else for RAW recording (besides the media). ARRI themselves call it "in-camera ARRIRAW recording".

Also, as mentioned...we're a long way from 2013 and RED/Sony...I really don't see them taking action in a world where everyone will eventually have internal RAW recording. (Maybe I'm wrong.)

Blackmagic of course has CinemaDNG and now BRAW, Kinefinity has KineRAW, Canon's CRL...it's only a matter of time before the others join in.
