C200: C200 not triggering BMVA 5" over SDI

I have just got the BMVA 5" as an extra monitor and some sort of backup recorder for 1080P, but i can't get it to start recording automatically triggered by the C200 over SDI! I've all the settings right (I think ...) but nothing happens.
Anyone else using tried the BMVA triggered over SDI?

I have the BMVA 4K but will have to test when I get home this evening. If no one has tried by then, I'll be happy to test.

You might try the timecode run function on the BMVA and make sure timecode is being transmitted over the SDI connector of the C200. That should work regardless of trigger setting on the C200.

Thanks would be great if you could try it! Much appreciated!!

Ok so I'm seeing the same results as you BUT there is a workaround - if you set the trigger on your BMVA to timecode, when you hit record on the C200, it WILL trigger the BMVA to start recording. I think this is a bug, at least if I'm reading page 149 of the C200 manual correctly. Here's what I tested-

On the C200, I turned on REC COMMAND (Menu>Record Settings>page 4). According to the C200 manual, this should trigger recording to an external recorder no matter if the recorder is connected via SDI or HDMI. In this mode it would only work over HDMI for me. If you also enable the time code trigger on your BMVA, it will work via both outputs.

I think a call into Canon support is in order. Do they have a bug submission process? The workaround is valid but it appears that the trigger is not being sent over the SDI connection. I wonder if perhaps someone with an Atomos recorder could chime in to see if this issue is specific to the BMVA or if it's across all SDI recorders? We have an Odyssey 7Q at my work that I could test, I just need to find time while I'm in the office lol.

Thanks for testing this! I will try it out as soon as i get to the studio. I’ll give my Canon-rep a call as well!
I’ll keep you posted here!

Yep, you're absolutely right Dustin, it works as long as I set Trigger Rec-option in the BMVA to T/C Run but not if its set to SDI/HDMI. Haven't tried it via HDMI but I'll take your word on that!
I also sent a message about this to the guy in charge of video at Canon Sweden.

Update, I spoke to a Canon rep earlier and they tested this functionality with an Odyssey and it worked fine. I'm going to test with a 7Q+ this evening and will also test the SDI trigger from a Sony ENG camera I use and will report back.

That said, so far this appears to be an issue with the BMVA and not with the C200.

So, I had mixed results last night but I think ultimately, this is an issue with the BMVA and not the C200.

I could NOT get the C200 to trigger the Odyssey 7Q I tested but it also would not trigger from my Sony X70 camera either. The Canon rep I'm working with says this functions fine on his so I have to assume there's something wrong with my 7Q and I didn't have time to reload the firmware.

I tested the SDI trigger with my Sony X70 camera on the BMVA and it worked fine. I found some threads on Blackmagic's website indicating SDI triggering is spotty since a firmware update earlier this year. I have to believe this is exclusive to the BMVA / C200 combo (reportedly, the same issue exists with ARRI cameras).

TL;DR - Chalk it up to more corner cutting on Blackmagic's part and use timecode triggering instead lol.
