Weak Codec in both HD and 4K.
4K RAW is DCI not UHD.
No timecode in or out.

This is not a camera for serious documentary or broadcast work. Still aimed at the event and wedding market. Canon states in their advertising that it is targeted as a "B" camera for the C300 II but it is crippled with no timecode. Just finished a job using both the C300 II and an original C300 and it worked fine because we could jam sync the cameras. Independents may buy this camera hoping to shoot low end films, docs, etc, and if you are aiming for streaming online it might be the right camera. Too little too late for me. Might also work for some corporate work.

Strangely low end and high end at the same time with not much in the middle. If you're in the unique position of producing YouTube vlogs by day and Netflix approved 4K content by night...then the C200 has you covered.

Even though Canon's 'optimised' 8 bit may look better than competitors 10 bit, most traditional broadcasters still won't accept it.

Yes, of course, it's not like any grip ever improvised anything on the spot. Ever.

Post of the day, this cracked me up. Nice.

I agree, great post Bern. The solution is interesting but yes, kind of homemade looking and definitely not refined or integrated into the design of any camera. I would love to shoot the C200 RAW to SSDs integrated into the body somehow. Shooting tons of RAW Light to a cheap 480GB SSD makes sense. But then the Sonys, REDs, Panasonics of the world couldn't gouge us with exorbitantly priced proprietary media ;-)

I've shot RAW a few times on my F55 and from an operator perspective, it's easy. But I had nothing to do with the post. Funny enough, one of the shoots was for BTS/EPK for a movie. They wanted 4K RAW because the interviews were green screen.

I ran across an R5 RAW recorder for the F5/55 on eBay and it was a really low price and in great shape. I guess some guys are dumping them to get the new R7. I thought about it for a minute, BUT as you say, the proprietary media is exorbitantly priced. Their cards go from $1200 for a 256GB to $4500 for their fastest 1TB card. For comparison, a 256GB XQD(SxS Adapter) only runs $376.

Camera media is still all relative as far as cost. CFast 2.0 cards at $679.00 per 256 GB seem expensive until you look at P2 Express cards for the Varicam LT at roughly double that price for the same 256GB. Which seems really expensive until you shoot with a Codex back and media. I just wish we could bag most of these dumb proprietary format profit centers and we could shoot most everything on certified, robust SSDs at about $200.00 for 480GB. That's one thing I miss about the old days, S16 film was S16 film, no matter which camera you shot it with. Every time I buy a CFast, P2, SxS, card, I just stare at it, knowing I just spent a lot of money on a format that will be trash heaped in just a few short years.
