hmmmm if its 10 bit 422 internal at 4k.. and external 4k raw via sdi... then they may be up to something and it may be the reason I actually get rid of my fs7.. I forget how lovely it is to put canon glass on a camera with a ef mount without adapters!

And to have DPAF with face tracking, incredibly handy for run & gun when you are tracking moving subjects with shallow DOF.

Internal compressed Raw is a big deal. And 1 Gbps ain't that compressed either.

Provided no oddities are part of the package, this is an impressive spec sheet.

The one oddity that will exist for a bit concerns the recording formats, but it's not a big deal IMO.

Here's more from Cinema5D:

"At this point there is another interesting fact to realize about this camera: While it offers 4K RAW recordings at 50P, which is great, we see that the only alternative is 150Mbps MP4, which is a rather low bitrate codec that is not ideal for professional productions. So at this time there is no “410Mbps All-I codec” as on other EOS cameras like the C300 mark II. This might be a deal breaker for some documentary and TV productions aiming for good quality recordings, who don’t necessarily want to shoot RAW with the more extensive and hard disk space consuming RAW workflow.

The good news however is, that according to the press release, Canon’s XF-AVC video format will be available on a future firmware upgrade. The upgrade will be free of charge and is planned to be available from Q1 2018."

I believe it's 100 Mbps at 24p and 150 at 60p.

The interim solution is external ProRes via SDI.

But I agree that the codec availability appears a little odd. It's obviously a cartel thing.

Very impressive. Probably the camera to get right now if you're buying something around that price.

* I don't think the low bitrate is a huge issue. The "you can shoot RAW if you need to" argument is not very strong because that will cost you a fortune in CFAST cards, but "the C100 looked great at 28 Mbps" is a definitely solid argument. Go for something else if you want a better codec and don't want RAW, but lots of people will be perfectly happy with the internal codec. The biggest downside I see is that it loses two stops of DR if you don't shoot RAW, and changing codec depending on the shot is going to be painful in the end.

* Dear Sony: this is what happens when your FS7 update is just tweaks and usability things. So, when are your new cameras coming out?

Seems like a "Sorry, but we can't cripple the C300 line..." camera... I love the Canon look, but I truly hate their amount of camera models. It's sickening, and they could easily cut it down in half and both make money, please customers and at the same time compete with Sony and the others.

I'm actually holding my breath for the Sony A9s seeing what they put in the non-s....

It's really not that bad. The C200 and C300 are differentiated by being for different markets. The C300 has a ton of niceties you need like TC, more SDI outs, for bigger productions, while the C200 is geared towards smaller ones but lets you eek out high quality RAW too. It's perfect for small indie narrative projects. This does leave the C100 in no man's land regarding 4K, but the idea of having three camera models (200-300-700) with the same sensor is actually really great, makes for a good ecosystem.

Does seem like the C300 II is due for an upgrade though.

Unless you really want RAW, I don't see much crossover/competition between these two. In fact, It's almost as though they've purposefully not gone head to head with the FS7/mkII. With the XDCA, the FS7 ticks plenty of boxes that this camera doesn't seem to - mostly to do with usability and connectivity. A lot of these features are also limited to the C300mkII, so it leaves Canon room for differentiation in their own line.

It's closest direct competitor will probably be Red Raven.

Closest direct competitor, for me, is the BM 4.6k, but apart from that, yes, you're probably right...
*I* would probably take a C200 over an FS7, but I'm not getting any of them anyway (not within my budget). For the relevant markets, they may be much more differentiated than they look to me at first sight.
