C200: C200 CFast to SSD Solution

Not bad johnnie! Does recording not work with the door open?

If you already have a brick battery set up, mounting the SSD doesn't seem like as much of a pain.

You can put a piece of plastic, paper, etc underneath the hinge to fool the camera into thinking the Camera Door is close but not ideal to be honest.

Yeah it's a solution I hope more people jump on especially when someone figures out the door issue.

Can anyone recommend a portable USB battery that can continuously power an SSD? That would be a much lighter and simpler option if you don't otherwise want or need an external camera-battery brick.

Updated post, Gimbals are possible.

Any power bank should work as long as it has a USB port.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing & good luck with this set up! Looking forward to hearing back after your shoot with it.

My plan is to remove plastic “window“ on doors and then maybe drill bigger window hole for e-sata connector. What you think?

e-sata an sata connectors are too large. But, if you are on facebook c200 groupe there is some news, Trevor Curtis managed to close the door with my flat cable!

Oofa, this doesn't visually scream "reliable" but cool that you guys are hacking it. So that little SSD is just hanging out there on it's own? Is it mounted to a bracket or just Velcroed to the plate? Good for cooling I suppose but in the conditions I've been shooting in with lots of blowing sand, ocean spray, this whole setup feels as if it would last about 10 minutes.

How is it not reliable? I've yet to run into any issues. Sure it's not for every gig you get but for run and gun it's awesome! I have my SSD in the Atmos case to protect it slightly but lets be honest, the C200 is already exposed. You have the vent on the left which sand can easily get in to. the SSD is the least of my worries.

Now that you don't have to modify the door. The excuses to spend thousands on CFast cards is idiotic if you ask me. Sure some will argue it's another thing hanging from your camera but so is the monitor, the mic, etc. these cameras are made to be built bigger. If I'm on a true run and gun job where I need something super small and portable, Ill strip down the C200 and just use CFast cards but most jobs require me to use the SSD because I tend to shoot less when using CFast cards.

Using the SSD makes you shoot better and saves you a ton of money that you can now keep from the budget of the gig.

It's not only about saving money for media. The perceptions of the people doing the hiring may also be at stake. If you think of a large collection of CFAST cards vs. a lab experiment, one set up relaxes, while the other disturbs.

Physically, decreasing the chances of something going wrong is a top priority for some. Even if your'e fine with avoiding the cable, someone else might screw it up.

Johnnie, I like your solution and enjoy your out of the box thinking. I'm sure for any personal projects, shorts, budget narrative, and many other scenarios it's fine. However, you don't have to convince everyone of your methods and need to accept that people have different shooting styles. Just like you think spending thousands on CFAST cards is idiotic, some would think showing up with what looks like a last minute high school project is also idiotic.

Look at Eric's cards from this thread - http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?355912-CFast-compatability-Cards-that-support-VPG-130/page15. Despite being a significant amount of money, I'm sure the cost of these cards is negligible. At the end of the day, the media is contributing to Eric's reputation and will help him get hired again.

I normally agree with everything Putedrifting posts, but I find myself siding with Johnie here, assuming he sorts out the ruggedness issue ,how is this any less reliable than say and HDMI external recorder? From my experience in the industry there are generally a lot of these little hacks in use everyday.

HDMI is a pretty poor example of a reliable connection.

For sure...and he's comparing this solution to the popularity of HDMI recorders, which is massive.

I.E. So if like so many people use them and they are fine, what's wrong with this setup?

---

I don't care either way...it's all overpriced.

It depends and that's my point. Why pretend a certain solution is bulletproof just because it's popular? I've already explained what's wrong with the set up - sometimes there's more to video production than getting away with the cheapest options.

You're right, HDMI recorders are fine for many people. At the same time, rather than the HDMI monitor poorly held in place by a cheap articulating arm, others opt for the same monitor using SDI and a titan arm. We could do this all day - DSLR vs ALEXA MINI, mic on camera vs. mic near talent, internal vs. external recording
