C100: C100mkii Handle mic pre or external mixer video test

Interesting. I think the Cinema series has pretty decent preamps and A/D. I am willing to use the internal audio recorded through the XLR's. My only concern is pushing the gain up very much. I start to hear preamp hiss over a gain of about 7.

Your results match mine on a test I did a few years ago with my old Canon XF100 and an AT4053b but I get similar results with my current Sony X70. The actual sound quality difference is very small. I hear only about a 5% improvement in richness and subtlety with the mixer. One thing - the volume on your YT video is a bit low, so I'd make sure to test at the normal levels you use. I've never had to turn the camera XLR inputs higher than 5.

Unity gain on the handle for external inputs is about "5". Settings lower than that mean you risk overloading the preamp. I've found consumer level line level inputs to be a problem because it requires me to crank up the gain on the handle to around "8" for line level and I can definitely hear some added hiss. I usually just pad or attenuate the input and switch to mic level when using consumer level line level.
