C100: C100mk2 as a interview B-CAM to C300 MK2

I've got some interviews to shoot and the production co. is supplying a c100mk2 for the B angle for the interviews we'll be shooting. Home interiors, controlled environment, so nothing too taxing in terms of dynamic range or low light I can't imagine.

What are some limitations I should be aware of to get the most out of the c100's image, and get it to match the c300mk2? I don't want to mess with an external recorder if I don't have to, so I'm hoping the 4:2:0 will be sufficient in this type of environment, thoughts?

I think they would match pretty well though I've heard the C300 MK II has a bit more magenta than the C100. I would shoot both in CLOG or the Wide profiles and match from there. You'll have more latitude to move the C300 MK II image around given the better color space so you may have to end up matching the C100.

Just make sure you're not over exposing the C100 image because there will be little chance to recovery any blown out highlights. I don't think an external recorder will yield any better results unless you're going to do some green screen work.

The color matrix and the white balance are different between the two cameras. Seriously, the white balance can be an issue since if you set both cameras to the same Kelvin temperature, you will end up with noticeably different color temperatures in the image. Canon Log has the same distributions in camera, so I would stick with that. Color can generally be corrected to match in post fairly easily, although I would do an individual white balance off of a white card for each camera. Don't underexpose the C100 and you should be fine with 4:2:0.

What Chuck said. I used to own the C100 MKI and the C300 MKI and they were easy to match. I now have the C200 and it does not match very well with the C300 MKII without someone who knows what they're doing to CC and grade them to match. Whenever possible, I shoot RAW on the C200 when pairing with the C300 MKII and we need to match them, RAW gives you 12bit to mess with. But shooting UHD, they seem pretty far away. I have never shot the C100 MKII with the C200 or 300 MKII but I think shooting C-Log would be smart. WDR doesn't match from what I've heard and C-Log gives you more lattitude to play.

Yeah, that is the other thing. Don't overexpose on the Canon C100 MK II too much. With the 4:2:0 it can be a bit hard to find color in anything over about 80%IRE and skin tones can be hard to recover if over 70%.

helpful thread from this outsider's perspective.

thanks for the sharing.

thumbs up.

The only way I found to match the cameras is to set them both to REC709 and balance them against a Chroma du Monde chart.
Once you do that feed both cameras into the same monitor to A/B them against one another and look at them side by side.

It's not a quick process but I finally have settings I like.

I used to own both and found matching them pretty easy. I shot Wide DR on both.

This video was C300 Mark II for wide shot, C100 Mark II for medium shot, and C100 Mark I for off-axis tight shot.

I did the same thing when I owned the cameras, although I set the cameras to C-Log and corrected the C300 MK II to match the C100 MK II. I used side by side PIP on my monitor with a C Log LUT applied. I never quite got them to match, I think I ended up starting the C300 II in neutral matrix and subtracting a bunch of red from blue and green.

The weirdest thing is that my EOS R matches the C300 II almost perfectly in C Log and neutral matrix with +5 magenta added.

Thanks for the info.. You've worked with both the c300mk1 and C100mk2.. If you could pick one of these to be your B camera mainly for interviews and some b-roll to shoot along side the c300mk2, which would it be? The client I'm working with has both cameras and I'd like to pick the best one. Does the c300 have better DR? That might be the deciding factor for me.

I think the c300 and c100 mkii have the same DR. The difference is the former is 4:2:2 and 50mbps...

People often forget though that the C100 has a more efficient codec. I don't believe the bitrate difference matters at all. I suppose MAYBE the 4:2:2 would be in the C300's favor, but in every other regard, the C100mkII is more advanced camera.

As the saying goes, six of one, half dozen of the other. For me, personally I always preferred the colors from my C100 MKI over the MKII, they changed the color science for the MKII, it seemed to have more Sony-like magenta in the skin tones to me.
And the C300 MKI has excellent colors too. I guess if push came to shove, I would shoot the C300 MKI, but I'd be just as happy with the C100 MKII although I don't think the color science would match as easily. You're going to shoot C-Log?

[QUOTE You're going to shoot C-Log?[/QUOTE]

Thats the plan. Clog3 most likely (its been years since I touched a c300mk1) does it have clog1-3?

C100 MKII and C300 MKI only have C-Log, period. C-Log 2 and 3 came to the game in the C300 MKII and the C200, 700.
