C100: C100mII after the new 1.0.2.1.00 firmware upgrade - issue with IS lenses

Hello guys, I noticed very strange issue straight after I upgraded my C100M2 to 1.0.2.1.00 which was released late July this year. I have attached IS lens and whenever I do panning or tilting movement, no matter handheld or on tripod, the image is delaying a bit of where the actual movement is. It is like an image lagging and when I stop the movement it takes 1 more second for the image to come to the final point.

I know that the idea of image stabilisation is to cover all small shakes and trembles, but this is definitely something different, I haven't seen before on the previous firmware.

As a result it is really annoying , because I can not see on both screen/viewfinder where exactly I am on the move and where to stop panning or tilting.

I opened a case with Canon Support, but they said I can not move back to the previous firmware and they are not sure where the issue comes from. I tested the problem with few IS lens 17 - 55 f2.8, 10-18 f4.5/5.5 and 24- 105 f4 and it is there on all of them.

Have any you experienced same issue?

Do you think it might be part of the upgrade from Canon and they thinking its better the IS to work this way.

Or someone has an idea how I can downgrade to the previous firmware.

Thank you very much.

Nick

Seen nothing like that here. Sure, there is typical "lag" with IS on but nothing remotely close to 1000ms delay! I don't know if it's possible but how 'bout trying a reload of the new firmware?

Thank you guys. I just tested on another C100 and find the same behaviour. So considering also your opinions here I think is not an issue, but the normal way of how the IS works.

Strange but that means that my C100 m2 was not working at its best with IS before the upgrade, so now the upgrade makes this thing better. Thanks very much.

The 24-105/4 has 2 IS modes. Did you try both? That and the 17-55 have tripod "detection" (I can't find data on the 10-18) so it's strange that you see it mounted as well. With that said, can I assume that this happens with IS turned off? I find it hard to believe that the camera firmware has anything to do with this other than modify the mode comms between the two units. An onboard lens micro talks to the element(s) servo directly...

Wait for Canon's reply I guess.

he's saying it does it when handheld unless i am reading wrong, and that sounds effed up. you should be able to do handheld pans etc. without that weird delay.

He said no matter handheld or tripod (had to re-read post). At any rate, I would tend to agree with you that something strange is afoot. Tried another C100?? What, another mark II? Another upgraded MKII? What does this mean...

I'm pretty sure that IS firmware is built into the lens. That's why you can use IS on non Canon Cameras. Every lens behaves differently as well.

I just don't thinking you noticed this behavior before. What'st strange is that the 240195 and 17-55 tend to snap into place with the IS, which I find more annoying for panning. The newer IS systems actually have the lag built in which allows the IS to smoothly pan with the lens.

There is bi-directional communication between the body and lens. Delay pushing 1000ms might mean interruption in the IS function called upon by the body. Read the firmware update notes for the C300II that was posted yesterday- it's not all on the lens. And speaking of that, what are you basing the statement "every lens behaves differently"? I would think assembly variability of this nature would be damn hard to pick-up on with the eye.

I meant that each lens design behaves differently. The 18-135 STM lens seems to take about a second for the IS to catch up to the newest position when panning, whereas I remember my 17-55 and 24-105 constantly trying to latch onto a specific frames. Hey, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the new firmware has changed the way IS works. I haven't noticed a change, but I have always been aware that some lenses can take awhile to reach steady state after being moved.

Sorry, I don't many IS-equipped lenses. However, the image in the EVF with the 18-135 IS lens attached appears to behave similar to when one of my EF lens is onboard. What you are posting about sounds bizaare. No way does my system lag by 1000ms! If it were me, I'd try a reload of the firmware.
